01/09/2011 | "Heart of Europe" - Dresden Music Festival 2012A few days ago the programme of the 34th Dresden Music Festival was publsihed. It will take place from May 15 to June 3, 2012. The predecessors were the festivals of the Saxon electors at the Zwinger palace, but the festival itself owes its very existence to a government decree in the middle of the Cold War. In 1978 the Central Committee of the SED and the Council of Ministers decided that an annual "international music festival of rank" will take place in Dresden.
Since a few days the programme for 2012 is published. Theme in the coming year will be "Heart of Europe". The Triangle Vienna-Budapest-Prague will be the musical heart of the festival. Its strong heart has given the musical Titan Europe the reputation of being the »cradle of music« to this day. Whether imperial splendor, the French Revolution, romanticism or the industrial revolution – between the Danube and the Vltava Rivers, everything was turned into music, and shines forth to this day for all mankind. The heart beats to the rhythm of the region of Bohemian, Hungarian and Austrian folk music as well as the rhythm of the Viennese court. Especially the musical traditions and styles in the multinational Habsburg Empire made for a unique and inspiring blend. This vitality, but also the tension between brilliance and disintegration of the Habsburg monarchy promoted a creativity whose power has not abated to this day.
