Itinerary: Cycling tour from Meissen to Bad Schandau (or return)

Activity and culture in the Saxon Elbe Valley

Back

Total length of the route: approx. 75 km

Day 1: Individual travel arrangements to Meissen
We recommend a walking tour through the 1000 year old town and the view over the roofs from the Albrechtsburg Castle.

Day 2: Round trip to Riesa and back (approx. 56 km)
Passing the small wine villages on the right side of the river you will arrive at Riesa. The town is famous for its pasta production. In the transparent noodle centre you can gain an insight into the modern food production at the second biggest German pasta manufacturer.
For your return to Meissen we recommend the left side of the river.

Day 3:
Meissen - Dresden (approx. 30 km)
After a visit of the porcelain manufactory in the morning you will cycle via Radebeul to Dresden.
You will have enough time to discover Dresden, which is also nicknamed "Florence on the Elbe".

Day 4:
Sightseeing day in Dresden
With your hop-on-hop-off ticket you will have the whole day to discover this beautiful town. The sightseeing bus takes you to 22 different stops. Included in the ticket are three guided tours: through the Baroque Zwinger Palace (Saxony's masterpiece consisting of a series of pavilions and galleries around a huge open esplanade), around the rebuilt Church of Our Lady and through the Pillnitz Palace. Beautifully situated on the banks of the river Elbe on the southern edge of the city, the former summer residence of the Saxon royal court is one of Saxony's architectural treasures.

Day 5: Excursion to Moritzburg Castle (approx. 50 km)
The leads you to Radebeul - the town of the famous western writer Karl May. Each year in May many people enjoy the festival of Indians and cowboys. We recommend to go by the historical steem railway called "Lössnitzdackel" from Radebeul West to Moritzburg Castle to avoid the rising part of the cycling tour. After visiting the former hunting lodge of king August the Strong you can easily cycle downhill to the Elbe river and back to Dresden.

Day 6: Dresden - Bad Schandau (approx. 45 km)
The first highlight of the day will be a stroll through the gardens of Pillnitz Palace, the former summer residence of the royal Wettin family of Saxony. The park with its numerous trees, some of which are more than 200 years old, is regarded as a significant collection of rare and precious plants. From here the journey takes you along the Elbe river past the Koenigstein fortress to Bad Schandau in the heart of Saxon Switzerland.

Day 7: Bad Schandau and surrounding
Bad Schandau is one of the oldest and most centrally located resorts of the Saxon Switzerland National Park. The area is situated well at the estuary of the River Kirnitzsch. A typically styled old German town is hidden behind the front of the houses belonging to the Elbe River promenade. Bad Schandau is a good starting point for walking tours through the impressive landscape.

Day 8: Departure from Bad Schandau
Of course you can always extend your trip with extra nights in Dresden or other towns. We will be pleased to arrange additional accommodation for you.
