03/06/2010 | Dresden: Reopening of the Albertinum on 20 June 2010Reopening of the Albertinum with the New Masters Picture Gallery and the Sculpture Collection on 20 June 2010Art from Romanticism to the Present. In the anniversary year of the Dresden State Art Collections there will no be a new highlight soon: The renovated Albertinum is to reopen on 20 June 2010. The new concept for the museum was occasioned by the disastrous flooding of the River Elbe in 2002 which badly affected the storerooms in the basement of this historic building. An architectural competition brought forth a spectacular concept produced by the Berlin firm Staab Architekten. The firm’s architectural masterpiece consists of a raised structure containing storerooms and restoration workshops as an "ark for art". This new structure has created not only a bright inner courtyard with space for a café, bookshop, gallery concerts and theatrical performances but also a second entrance to the museum.
Having been closed for the last 5 years, the Albertinum will once again give lovers of art from the 19th to the 21st centuries the opportunity to marvel at modern artists and their world-famous works. Dresden’s Sculpture Collection and the New Masters Picture gallery – two of the city’s most important museums of art – will be taking up residence here. The holdings of both museums, with paintings ranging from Caspar David Friedrich to Gerhard Richter and sculptures ranging from Rodin to the 21st century, have an outstanding worldwide reputation.
