2011 and 2012 are years of great cultural and musical highlights in Germany. AugustusTours is pleased to provide you with the following information about some of the major events in Germany in order to aid your plans for new and interesting tours to Germany.

2011:

Berlin: Gallery Weekend, 29 April to 01 May

Berlin is the canvas for this weekend of exhibitions and openings at 40 galleries.

Dresden: Semper Opera Ball and Semper Open-Air Ball, 14 January

The 6th SemperOpera Ball offers a mixture of classical music, entertainment and international artists. This unique event sees 2000 guest dance inside the opera house as thousands of revellers watch on a big screen on the theatre square in front of the Opera House.

Dresden: Traditional Saxon steamer parade, 01 May

Nine historical paddle steamers parade from the Terassenufer to a parade trip toward Pillnitz. Spectators can experience this worldwide unique spectacle either on board or on the riverbanks along the steamers’ route. A live band on each boat is on hand to get passengers in the mood for a special trip.

Dresden: Dresden Music Festival, from 18 May to 05 June

The festival enjoys a prominent status amongst Europe’s most prestigious music festivals and is distinctive due to its combination of annually changing themes and concert-series structure. It takes place at a variety of different venues including the renowned Semper Opera House and the rebuilt Church of Our Lady.

Leipzig: Leipzig Christmas Market, from 22 November to 22 December

The second-oldest Christmas market in Germany invites you for an Advent stroll and offers a varied Christmas programme for young and old. Over 250 originally decorated stands justify its reputation as one of the largest and most attractive Christmas markets in Germany.

Thuringia: 200 years of Franz Liszt – A European in Thuringia

In the year of the 200th anniversary of the birth of Liszt, the Free State of Thuringia will be teaming up with a number of other organisations to celebrate the momentous work of this phenomenal pianist, conductor and composer. Throughout 2011, more than 200 events spread over a number of special themes are set to take place including concerts, competitions, exhibitions and a large ceremony on the actual date of Liszt’s 200th birthday, the 22nd of October 2011. Highlights are set to include the statewide exhibition “Franz Liszt - A European in Weimar.“(24th of June to the 30th of October) and the Thuringian Festival “Überlisztet “(18th of June to the 09th of July).

Weimar: Opera Tristan and Isolde, 05 June

Weimar: Richard Wagner’s Ring Cycle, from 05 to 13 June and from 02 to 10 July

2011 will see the complete Ring Cycle performed during the Weimar Wagner weeks in June and July  


2012

Leipzig: 800 years of the THOMANA

2012 sees Leipzig use festival weeks and concerts to celebrate the 800th birthday of St. Thomas Boys Choir, St. Thomas Church and St. Thomas school. A wide range of events will be taking place throughout the year under the motto “800 years of the Thomana – believe, sing, learn”, one example being the International Boys Choir Meeting at St. Thomas Church from the 19th to the 25th of March.

Leipzig: Bach Festival Leipzig 800 years of musica sacra, from 07 to 17 June
