• How long has the Altmuehl cycle path existed?
  The Altmühltal Cycle Route was established in 1979, making it one of the oldest long-distance cycle routes in Germany.
• What is the route of the Altmuehl cycle path?
  The Altmühl, which flows into the Danube at Kehlheim, has its source in the north-east of the small, winding town of Rothenburg ob der Tauber. The 227 km long Altmuehl Valley Cycle Route follows the river via the baroque town of Eichstätt, Kehlheim with the Liberation Hall and Weltenburg Abbey to the medieval town of Regensburg on the Danube.
• Route character of the Altmuehl cycle path?
  With only one significant ascent (Frankenhöhe), the Altmuehl Cycle Route leads along paved farm tracks, separate cycle paths or small, low-traffic side roads. The Altmühl has a low flow velocity, which is why you are invited to cool off at numerous river baths on your cycle tour along the Altmuehl. The cycle route between Gunzenhausen and Kelheim in particular is therefore ideal for families and beginners. If, on the other hand, you are a sporty long-distance cyclist, you can extend your Altmühl cycle tour from Kelheim on the Danube cycle path to Passau.

  The Altmuehl cycle path is labelled with a green and yellow logo. The square sign shows a stylised cyclist by a river and a shell, which is intended to draw attention to the historical and archaeological features of the region. The good signposting of the Altmuehl cycle path is based on the guidelines of the Allgemeiner Deutscher Fahrradclub (ADFC).
