Splendid views of the mountain and lake scenery can be enjoyed on this circular bike tour throughout Austrian Salzkammergut. Salzburg, Austria’s fourth largest city, is start and final point of your cycling holidays that also passes Mozart’s town St. Gilgen, the lovely village of St. Wolfgang, pre-historic stilt houses at Lake Mondsee and the magnificent Salzkammergut mountain range.

Don’t miss to visit the unique sights of Salzburg including the birthplace and residence of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, Hohensalzburg fortress, Hellbrunn castle or the Domquartier complex consisting of palace, cathedral and St. Peter’s Abbey. Apart from all these highlights, this beautiful region is also well-known for its crystal clear mountain lakes, its ancient customs that are still lived and its lovely, down-home people.

Itinerary

  • Day 1: Individual arrival in Salzburg
    Take your time to stroll through the old town of Salzburg and visit some of its famous sights. The archbishops began to transform the city of Salzburg into a Baroque jewel more than 400 years ago. Thanks to the incredibly wealthy of the diocese resulting from salt and gold trade, important architects were brought to Salzburg and created a city planning masterpiece that is treasured and protected today as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

  • Day 2: Salzburg – Lake Wolfgangsee (approx. 50 km)
    As you cycle through Salzburg’s Flachgau via Eugendorf to Thalgau you will pass the impressive Drachenwand (dragon wall) before reaching picturesque Lake Mondsee. Up in Scharfling a magnificent view opens up towards Lake Wolfgangsee from where it goes down rapidly to lovely St. Gilgen, Mozart’s town. Highlight of the day is a relaxing boat trip across Lake Wolfgangsee.

  • Day 3: Lake Wolfgangsee – Lake Traunsee (approx. 41 or 49 km/25 or 30 mls)
    In the morning you will cycle in direction to Bad Ischl, which was the summer residence of Emperor Franz Joseph and many artists that came here to enjoy the imperial city and famous spa resort. Continue cycling along the River Traun via Ebensee before reaching Traunkirchen an Lake Traunsee, which forces its way through the Traunstein Mountain and the Höllengebirge range.

  • Day 4: Lake Traunsee – Lake Attersee (approx. 35 km)
    The today’s bike tour leads you to Gmunden that is well-known for its ceramics manufactory and Castle Ort that is situated in the Traunsee Lake. You continue the tour through the Aurachtal valley in direction Lake Attersse.

  • Day 5: Lake Attersee – Lake Mondsee (approx. 33 km/20,5 mls)
    Today you will cycle along the shore of the turquoise Lake Attersee to Unterach and then directly reach Lake Mondsee. Cycling along the north bank to the village of Mondsee, you can visit the pre-historic stilt houses and enjoy some local specialties.

  • Day 6: Lake Mondsee – Trumer Lake District (approx. 46 km/29 mls)
    Cycling through the lovely surroundings of Lake Mondsee you will soon pass Lake Irrsee, before you reach the Trumer Lake District. If you like beer, we recommend a stop at the Trumer Beer Brewery, where you have the opportunity to experience the microcosm of hops, malt and water.

  • Day 7: Trumer Lake District – Salzburg (approx. 46 km/29 mls)
    Along the Trumer Lake tour many lovely spots are ideal for a stop having a refreshing swim, before you cycle back to Salzburg enjoying a last view onto the magnificent Salzkammergut mountain range.

    Of course you can extend your cycling holidays with extra nights in Salzburg or other overnight locations along the way. We are very pleased to arrange additional accommodation for you.

How to get to the tour

Tips on how to get to Salzburg:

Arrival by train:
The main train station in Salzburg is very easy to reach with many national as well as international connections. From the train station in Salzburg, you then have the option of using public transportation to get to your hotel. Depending on the location of the hotel, a cab is also recommended.
Current timetable information and prices can be found at www.bahn.de and www.oebb.at.

Arrival by car:
Salzburg is easily accessible coming from Austria via the A1 or A10 and from Germany via the A8. Please note that there is a general vignette obligation on Austria's freeways and expressways. Depending on the hotel, there are direct parking options or often nearby. Please understand that there are limited parking facilities at the hotel, especially in the city centers.
Check directly with your starting hotel to see if they offer parking. At www.parkopedia.de you will find a good overview of other parking options and we will be happy to inform you individually.
