Information about the Danube Cycle Path
The Danube Cycle Path was honoured for the first time as a "4-star-quality route" by the German Cycling Association and Club for Cyclists (ADFC). This certification will be valid for three years and confirms a bike-path-study, based on various crucial factors, such as the length of the route, the practicability and surface of the paths and route guidance. Further criteria include congestion as well as the touristic infrastructure, public traffic connection and marketing. This club regularly labels different routes with three, four or five stars, five stars constituting the highest possible standard of quality.
General Information to this segment of the Danube Cycle Path
The Danube Cycle Path is well developed and signposted, easily allowing for extensions of the cycling tour. The bike path follows the river valley closely which means no sharp increases but a relaxing ride.
Once you have reached the narrow Danube valley the condition of the bike path changes to one with few ascents and short stages on gravel paths.
In case of high water the communities usually react quickly to block overflowed paths and to divert cyclists.

Itinerary
Detailed tour description
Day 1: Individual arrival in Donaueschingen The Brigach and Breg Black Forest rivers join to form the Danube near the town, but even the Romans thought the source of the river was located in the park of the Fürstenberg castle. The castle built in the Belle Epoch style is a testament to the importance of the Fürstenberg family.
Day 2: Donaueschingen – Mühlheim/Fridingen (approx. 45/50 km) The first stage of your today's bike tour leads you through the so-called „Baar“ landscape. Closed to Immendingen and Möhringen you will be able to witness a unique natural phenomenon: the Danube Sinkhole. Here the river disappears beneath the porous chalk rock for the majority of the year until it resurfaces 12 km further downstream in the "Aachtopf". You pass Möhringen and reach Tuttlingen. The main attraction is the Protestant church. The classical town hall and the many sculptures in the centre are also worth seeing. Through the valley you continue to Fridingen. There you will find the artists house "Scharf Eck", which was built on the former city walls and the famous viewpoint of "Knopfmacherfelsen". The Danube winds through the rocks of the Swabian Alps. Castles, forts and ruins are situated on the beautiful riverbanks and in the hills just beyond. You spend the night in Fridingen or Beuron.
Day 3: Mühlheim/Fridingen – Sigmaringen/Scheer (approx. 45 – 55 km) The bike trail continues beside the Danube, past romantic mills and picturesque corners of the valley. Soon Wildenstein Castle comes into view and just a little bit later you pass Werenwag, the famous medieval musicians' castle. Via Hausen im Tal you continue to Sigmaringen. Here you can see one of Europe's largest private weapons collection. Stroll through the historical town centre or visit the local museum.
Day 4: Sigmaringen/Scheer – Obermarchtal/Ehingen (approx. 40 – 70 km) Today's route starts out in the lovely forests and meadows of the open countryside of the Danube valley. Scheer was an ancient settlement of the Celts and Romans. Via Mengen, one of the five Habsburg towns by the upper Danube, you make your way to Hundersingen. Don't miss Heuneburg Museum with the fascinating exhibit about Celtic settling from 600 to 400 b.C. The climb up to the museum is rewarded by a splendid view over the valley. In the Middle Ages Riedlingen belonged to the Habsburg Dynasty. You bike along a part of the famous Upper Swabian Baroque Route. It winds through Upper Swabia and leads the interested traveller to many historical treasures. The old church of Zwiefalten Convent is known as one of the region's most beautiful churches. You spend the night in Obermarchtal or Surroundings.
Day 5: Obermarchtal/Ehingen – Blaubeuren – Ulm (approx. 40 - 60 km) There are two options for the journey to Ulm. You can either continue beside the Danube on the familiar bike trail or take the highly recommended route along the rivers Ach and Blau via Blaubeuren. The Danube Bike Trail takes you to the towns Oberdischingen and Erbach. The Ach valley on the other hand is quite narrow and is flanked by hilly terrain on both sides. Via Schelkingen you continue to Blaubeuren with the impressive "Blautopf" (Blue Pot). Your final destination is Ulm on the border to Bavaria.
Day 6: Ulm – Lauingen (ca. 50 km) After breakfast you leave Ulm on the well signposted Danube bike trail and pass the frontier between Baden-Wuerttemberg and Bavaria. The bike trail leads you via Weißingen to Leipheim, where the St. Veit Church, the Castle, the town walls and city towers are worth a visit. Later on the route takes you via Gundelfingen into the medieval ducal town Lauingen. Overnight stay in Lauingen or Dillingen.
Day 7: Lauingen – Donauwörth/Wörnitzstein (ca. 45/40 km) Through the nature reserve Apfelwörth you cycle towards your destination, Donauwörth on the Romantic Road, which was highly demanded ever since. You spend the last night in Donauwörth.
Day 8: Individual departure Of course you can always extend your bicycle tour along the Danube with extra nights in Donauwörth or other towns along the cycle route between Donaueschingen and Donauwörth. We are very pleased to arrange additional accommodation for you.
