Day 1: Individual arrival in Vienna
Welcome to Austria’s capitol. The city on the Danube is varied and thus there is something to discover for everybody: Imperialistic impressions in the baroque palaces of Schönbrunn and Belvedere, the finest Gothic at St. Stephen’s Cathedral and a mixture of marvellous impressions in the old university and modern ones in e.g. the Danube Tower or at “Time Travel Vienna”. Last but not least, more than 100 museums attract the visitors.
Overnight stay in Vienna -
Day 2: Vienna – Bratislava (approx. 65 km)
Enchanted by Vienna’s cultural diversity, you leave the urban bustle and cycle downriver along the Danube River towards Budapest. Just behind the city boarders of Vienna, you reach the Danube wetlands national park. Here, you can perfectly rest and enjoy the fascinating and species-rich landscape. However, not only the national park is worth having a break in. Later on, the castles Orth and Eckartsau as well as the spa town of Deutsch-Altenburg offer you exciting history and splendid glamour. Through the Hainsburg Mountains you will soon pass the border to Slovakia with its capital Bratislava. A visit to the medieval Devin Castle and a stroll through the historic old town should definitely be on your agenda here.
Overnight stay in Bratislava -
Day 3: Bratislava – Mosonmagyaróvár (approx. 40 km)
With many new impressions, you will leave Slovakia today after a short stretch and cross the border to Hungary at Raijka, where you will be greeted by charming villages. The entire section is dominated by agriculture. Your cycle route continues through the floodplain of the Rye Island with its countless side arms of the Danube - a paradise for birds and fish. It is not far to your overnight stay in Mosonmagyaróvár, a pretty town also known as "the town of 17 bridges".
Overnight stay in Mosonmagyaróvár -
Day 4: Mosonmagyaróvár – Györ (approx. 40 km)
On day 4 of your Danube travel from Vienna to Budapest, you will, once again, succumb to the charm of the Danube banks: Today you will continue your cycle tour leads through the natural paradise of the Rye Island. Little islands are located dreamily in the labyrinth of the Danube arms and offer magnificent motives for souvenir photos. Soon you will reach your desired destination for today, Györ. Here, not only are attractions like the castle Bischofsburg, the Basilica, the Napoleon House and Palais Esterházy worth seeing, the city by the mouth of three rivers also offers a bright landscape variety.
Overnight stay in Györ -
Day 5: Györ – Komárom (approx. 40 km)
The Danube cycle path leads you on smooth wavy service roads and side streets by the national stud “Bablona”, which is famous for its Arabian horse breed even far beyond boarders. Today, you have to accomplish the only steeper ascent during the bicycle tour between Vienna and Budapest. The divided city Kamarom awaits you as today’s stage finish offering you changing history under Roman, Celtic and royal influences.
Overnight stay in Komárom -
Day 6: Komárom – Esztergom / Visegrád (approx. 60 km + boat tour or train ride)
Today, you will once more pass a country boarder as you continue your cycle tour along the Slovakian Danube banks. Looking very nicely, typical regional farm villages that are connected via causeways and low traffic side streets line up along the Danube cycle path. A perfect occasion for a cycle break on the way is the largest famous Roman military location in Slovakia: Fort Kelamantia (Kastell Iza-Leányvár) is situated right by the Danube banks. A stop worth ist the bishop’s city Esztergom (also known as “Hungarian Rome”) whose basilica sits majestically enthroned and perfectly visible from even far distance over the city. Be impressed by the size of this cathedral and enjoy the stunning view down into the Danube valley. The last kilometres between Esztergom and Visegrád you will cycle on a Danube boat today, from where you can relax and admire the surrounding landscape. The so-called "Danube Bend" is considered one of the most scenic sections along your cycle tour.
(The overnight stay will be either in Esztergom or in Visegrád, depending on availability at the time of registration. In the case of Esztergom, the boat trip will take place the following day. The boat is expected to sail every Friday, Saturday and Sunday from the beginning of May to mid-September. Outside this period or on other days of the week, you will receive a train ticket as a substitute.)
Overnight stay in Esztergom or Visegrád -
Day 7: Esztergom/Visegrád – Budapest (approx. 65 km)
Today, you continue your bicycle tour along the Danube and reach your travel destination Budapest after approx. 60 km bike course. Your tour leads you, inter alia, to the island Szentendre, which is part of the Duna-Ipoly national parks and thus is a paradise for nature lovers. Szentendre is approx. 40km long and divides the current and separates the narrow Danube west arm from the eastern main current. Starting at the eponymous town Szentendre located at the right side of the Danube banks and its museum of farming, you continue your travel to Budapest. Enjoy the spectacular view over the famous sights Budapest has to offer before you enter the fray and discover attractions as e.g. Buda Castle, Fisherman’s Bastion or chain bridge.
