Detailed tour description

Day 1: Individual arrival in Cuxhaven
Welcome to Cuxhaven, the place where the Elbe River meets the North Sea! After your individual arrival in the seaside health resort you should take a deep breath. Enjoy the fresh sea air. What about a walk along the North Sea coast or through the so-called "Wattenmeer"?

Day 2: Stay in Cuxhaven
Today, you can choose between different opportunities to spend your day. You can either stay in Cuxhaven or visit the Island Neuwerk with its lighthouse. An-other alternative activity is a mudflat hiking tour starting from the National Park Center.

Day 3: CuxhavenBalje (approx. 40 km)
Today, you keep following the Elbe dykes past beautiful nature reserves. Breathe in the fresh North Sea breeze and enjoy the view of small thatched houses along the way. You cross Ottern-dorf and Neuhaus to reach Balje.

Day 4: Balje – Stade (approx. 70 km)
Passing by the towns Freiburg and Wischhafen, you will soon reach the “Kehdinger Land”. The Elbe cycle path here again guides you through protected terrain of outer dyke and with a little luck, you may get the opportunity to watch rare bird species. Today’s goal is the more than 1,000 year old city Stade, which has a beautiful, restorated old town. You can take a stroll here and enjoy the view of beautiful half-timbered houses.

Day 5: Stay in Stade
Enjoy a morning stroll through the more than 1000-year-old city Stade and dis-cover the beautiful old half-timbered houses. You can also do a roadtrip on the "Obstroute" – which is known as the largest contiguous fruit-growing region in Germany.

Day 6: Stade – Hamburg (approx. 50 km)
Today, you will cycle through the Altes Land, a quiet oasis which is known to be the largest contiguous fruit-growing region in Germany. Further information about our cycling holidays along the Elbe River Cycle Path

Cycle tours along Germany's most popular cycle path

Overwiev map of the Elbe River in GermanyThe Elbe flows through beautiful countryside. Its characteristic features include the towering Elbe Sandstone Massif, delightful riverbank meadows and impressive terrace vineyards. There are charming historical monuments along the river and lovely "old towns".

The Elbe, Germany's second largest river, flows through beautiful countryside. Its characteristic features include the towering Elbe Sandstone Massif, delightful riverbank meadows and impressive terrace vineyards in the region around Meissen. There are plenty of charming historical monuments along the river including magnificent castles, palaces and lovely, preserved, historical "old towns".

The cycle tours are fairly flat and follow the run of the river Elbe. The majority of the trails are in good condition and offer a wide range of cultural and leisure activities, making it ideal for travellers in every age group, for families and groups. The Elbe is one of the "slow" rivers. There is hardly any altitude, so it does not really matter whether you cycle upstream or downstream. However, the prevailing winds from the west and the countryside around the Elbe make the journey upstream preferable.
