Itinerary
Detailed tour description
Day 1: Individual arrival in Cuxhaven
Welcome to Cuxhaven, the place where the Elbe River meets the North Sea! After your individual arrival in the seaside health resort you should take a deep breath. Enjoy the fresh sea air. What about a walk along the North Sea coast or through the so-called “Wattenmeer”?
Day 2: Cuxhaven – Balje (approx. 40 km)
On your first bike tour along the Elbe River you will be passing through the fascinating protected landscape of the Lower Elbe with small thatched houses along the cycle path. After biking through the cities Otterndorf and Neuhaus you reach Balje, your today’s destination.
Day 3: Balje – Stade (approx. 70 km)
Passing by the towns Freiburg and Wischhafen, you will soon reach the “Kehdinger Land”. The Elbe cycle path here again guides you through protected terrain of outer dyke and with a little luck, you may get the opportunity to watch rare bird species. Today’s goal is the more than 1,000 year old city Stade, which has a beautiful, restorated old town. You can take a stroll here and enjoy the view of beautiful half-timbered houses.
Day 4: Stade – Hamburg (approx. 50 km)
Today, you will cycle through the Altes Land, a quiet oasis which is known to be the largest contiguous fruit-growing region in Germany. The Elbe River cycle path takes you past windmills, thousands of apple trees und picturesque fruit farms and after passing the town Jork, you will reach the Hanseatic City of Hamburg.
Day 5: Hamburg – Lauenburg (approx. 55 km)
Now that you have explored Hamburg, you will start your bike tour into the surroundings of this harbour city! From the Elbe metropolis, the first part of your cycle tour along the Elbe Cycle Path will take you through Geeshacht to the sailor city Lauenburg. The Elbe – here still very broad – winds its way through the flatland, dispersing into many smaller and larger tributaries.
Day 6: Lauenburg – Hitzacker (approx. 55 km)
Today you will bike through dreamy villages, wide floodplains and the beautiful region of the Wendland to Hitzacker – one of the most attractive cities on the German timbering lane. The historical old town, with its many timbering houses, invites for a stroll and perhaps a short stay.
Day 7: Hitzacker – Wittenberge (approx. 78 km)
On day 7 of your biking holidays, the Elbe River will accompany you on your way through small villages in the region of Wische, tranquil nature of Prignitz and past Lenzen, the gate to the Nature Paradise of the Elbe Valley. Cycling along the riverbank, you will continue your journey through the Wendland to Wittenberge. On your way, you will pass the former inner German borderland. Soon after that, Wittenberge will show on your horizon, well known for its many towers.
Day 8: Individual departure or transfer back to Cuxhaven
You can of course always extend your bike tour with extra nights in Hamburg, Wittenberge or other towns. We will be pleased to arrange additional accommodation for you.
