Day 1: Individual arrival to Hamburg
Hamburg, the second largest city in Germany, welcomes you! This city is exceptional through its artistry, authenticity, style and charm. It has over 60 theaters, over 100 music clubs, about 60 museums, some 280 music publishers and 200 recorded music companies. In addition to that more than 10,000 self-employed artists are living and working in Hamburg. In other words, this city will fascinate you in every way!
Overnight stay in Hamburg -
Day 2: Hamburg – Lauenburg (approx. 55 km)
Once you have left Hamburg, you will cycle along the Elbe riverbanks past numerous villages to Lauenburg. A nice opportunity for a stop presents itself on the way to Lauenburg in the town Geesthacht. After a relaxing break, you may visit the Geeshacht Museum, finding out just a little more about the local history and development. Once you have arrived and settled in Lauenburg, we recommend for you to go and see the "Rufer". This 185cm tall bronze statue was made in 1959 by a German sculptor Karl-Heinz-Goedtke and now stands on the forecourt of the Elbe Street.
Overnight stay in Lauenburg -
Day 3: Lauenburg – Hitzacker (approx. 55 km)
As soon as you leave Lauenburg, you will be entering the Natural Park Elbhoehen-Wendland. This Park stretches over an area of 1160 square kilometres throughout the eastern part of Lower Saxony and characterizes itself by special round villages. The flat landscape is dominated by vast floodplains, creating a paradise for birds such as storks, sea eagles or cranes. Your today’s destination is the city Hitzacker, situated on the right riverbank of Elbe. End your day with a visit to the local archaeological centre or a walk to Katemines Mill.
Overnight stay in Hitzacker -
Day 4: Hitzacker – Wittenberge (approx. 78 km)
After leaving Hitzacker, you will continue your bicycle holidays through dreamy villages lined up along the banks of the River Elbe until you reach Wittenberge. The history of this city is well known throughout Germany, as you will find several statues and monuments commemorating the victims of the local fascistic regime around the city. A local culinary specialty is the Knieperkohl, consisting of white cabbage, marrow-derived carbon, and green cabbage with wine and cherry leaves.
Overnight stay in Wittenberge -
Day 5: Wittenberge – Havelberg (approx. 38 km)
Today you will cycle on against the current of the Elbe. Your first stop is the city Ruehstaedt – a small and peaceful looking settlement right in the middle of the UNESCO Biosphere Reserve Elbe-River Landscapes. Apart from the old water tower and the late 15th century protestant village church, big prides of this town are the storks. Every year up to 40 stork pairs and many single storks come to Ruehstaedt, making this town the richest in storks in Germany. Returning back to the river, the next stop on the way is the town Havelberg. With its water-tourism center – a part of the Water-tourism project "Blue Ribbon" – you and your family will surely have a great time here.
Overnight stay in Havelberg -
Day 6: Havelberg – Tangermuende (approx. 50 km)
The sixth day of your bicycle holidays will present you another part of the River Elbe. Cycle through the untouched nature of the rivers surroundings and soak in its purity and beauty. Along the way you will pass by the town Arneburg. Apart from being an ideal place to take a break and regain your strengths, the local town church of St. George from the 18th century is worth a look. From there, you are only 15 more kilometres away from your destination in Tangermuende. There you can see the unique architecture of the Eulenturm and the 15th century town hall.
Overnight stay in Tangermünde -
Day 7: Tangermuende – Magdeburg (approx. 80 km)
Shortly after you leave Tangermuende, you will enter the bird watching area of Jerichow. The town Jerichow is best known for its historical late romanticist monastery originally built in the 12th century. As you continue on with your today’s cycle tour, you will eventually reach the construction of the waterway intersection. This impressive construction was built in 2001, allowing the ships to cross over the Elbe, connecting the waters of Hannover, Magdeburg and Berlin. Not long after the Waterway intersection you will reach the capital of Saxony-Anhalt. An absolute ‘must-see’ here is the Magdeburg Cathedral, the symbol of the city.
