Cycle tour from Prague (CZ) to Magdeburg

Itinerary

• Day 1: Individual arrival in Prague
  The "Golden city" has plenty to offer: Situated on both sides of the River Vltava, the highlights of Prague include the sixteen arches of the 14th century Charles Bridge, the Old Town Square and the irregular cobbled square with its famous Astronomical Clock.

• Day 2: Individual sightseeing in Prague
  Today you can also visit Hradčany and their royal palace. The historic centre is ideal for exploring by foot, and the friendly atmosphere in the shops, cafes and wine bars make it a delightful place to visit. You can, of course, also lend your bicycles already for this day and take a ride through Prague by bike.

• Day 3: Prague – Melnik (approx. 55 km)
  Today you will start your bicycle tour from Prague to Magdeburg. After breakfast, you will leave the Czech capital and cycle along the Vltava River to the centre of the bohemian wine growing area Mělník. From where the castle stands in Mělník you can enjoy a marvellous view over the confluence of the two rivers Vltava and Elbe ("Labe" in Czech). From here you can also observe further course of the Elbe Cycle Path, on which you will continue your tour.

• Day 4: Melnik – Litomerice and surrounding area (approx. 45 km)
  From today on, the Elbe will always lead you all the way to Magdeburg. Today’s cycle tour will take you past Roudnice to the former fortress and town Terezín. From here it is only a few kilometres to Litoměřice with its famous chalice house. Take a walk through the old town of Litoměřice to give your day the ideal ending of the day.

• Day 5: Litomerice and surrounding area – Decin (ca. 50 km)
  During todays stage, you will bike through Ústí nad Labem, past the ruin of castle Střekov, and follow the Elbe to Děčín. We recommend you to visit the local baroque castle, where also Frédéric Chopin went to search for inspiration before continuing.

• Day 6: Decin – Dresden (approx. 66 km)
  From Decín you will ride along the Elbe Cycle Path on the left bank of the Elbe River. Soon you will enter Germany and notice the bizarre rocky formations of the Saxon Switzerland lifting up on both sides of the Elbe River. Take your time and let the impressions of the picturesque Elbe valley take effect on you. Passing the famous rock formation Bastei and the fortress Königstein you will reach Pirna and then Pillnitz Castle. You will not regret taking a break here. Stroll among the famous Pillnitz Gardens before you continue your tour along the Elbe Cycle Path. Once in Dresden, the historic old town awaits you, where, among other things, a visit to the Frauenkirche is worthwhile.

• Day 7: Dresden – Riesa and surrounding area (approx. 58 - 66 km)
  You leave Dresden and get to Radebeul, the hometown of Karl May. From here, you can take a detour to Moritzburg Castle. Your next stop is Meissen, the center of the northeastern German wine region. Even from the distance you can see the symbol of the town: its castle and cathedral Albrechtsburg. A visit to the world famous porcelain factory should not be missed. Continue on to your destination for the day in the City of Sports Riesa. Here the popular noodle producer is at home and in the pasta museum you will learn about the rich pasta shape. Should you be on a weekday in Riesa, even a glance at the current production is possible.

• Day 8: Riesa and surrounding area – Torgau (approx. 40 - 48 km)
  Your cycle tour towards Magdeburg continues to Torgau, a Renaissance town featuring Schloss Hartenfels and the palatial church which is known as the first Protestant church of Germany and which was dedicated by Martin Luther.

• Day 9: Torgau – Lutherstadt Wittenberg (approx. 68 km)
  After leaving Torgau you will have a ride passing through the floodplains of the river Elbe until Pretzsch. Destiantion for the todays cycle tour along the Elbe river cycle path is Wittenberg, a town which became famous through Martin Luther. As the historic, spiritual and cultural centre of Europe, Wittenberg was influenced by such important historical figures as Martin Luther, Philipp Melanchthon, Lucas Cranach the Elder and Lucas Cranach the Younger. In 1996 the Luther memorials were placed on the UNESCO World Heritage List.

• Day 10: Lutherstadt Wittenberg – Dessau (approx. 37 km)
  This leg will take you through the beautiful meadows of the Elbe and past the world-famous Woerlitzer Park and Gardens. The 100-hectare large park offers numerous attractions including islands, canals, temples and statues. With Dessau you will enter a town which played an important role for a new architecture style including a whole life philosophy occured in the 1920s, the so called "Bauhaus".

• Day 11: Dessau – Magdeburg (approx. 78 - 88 km)
  Between Barby and Magdeburg you will cycle across another biosphere reserve along the river Elbe giving home to lots of vulnerable species of birds. Magdeburg offers lots of rambling parkways where you can relax. Experience also the famous Cathedral and the Monastery.
