Itinerary

Detailed tour description

Day 1: Individual arrival in Lutherstadt Wittenberg
After arriving in Wittenberg you need to have a walk through the city, which became famous through Martin Luther. As the historic, spiritual and cultural centre of Europe, Wittenberg was influenced by such important historical figures as Martin Luther, Philipp Melanchthon, Lucas Cranach the Elder and Lucas Cranach the Younger. In 1996 the Luther memorials were placed on the UNESCO World Heritage List.

Day 2: Lutherstadt Wittenberg – Torgau (approx. 68 km)
On your first bike tour along the Elbe cycle path you have to pass through the floodplains of the river Elbe until Pretzsch. Later on the bike tour continues to Torgau, a Renaissance town featuring Schloss Hartenfels and the palatial church which is known as the first Protestant church of Germany and which was dedicated by Martin Luther.

This bike tour can be shared by an extra night in Pretzsch (approx. 35 km/37 km). For prices see extra nights (Category B).

Day 3: Torgau – Strehla/Riesa (approx. 40 km/48 km)
On the second bike tour along the Elbe cycle path you will be enjoying the enchanting rural atmosphere of the Elbe town of Strehla until you reach the today's final destination Riesa, the city of sports. The town is also famous for its pasta production. In the transparent noodle centre you can gain an insight into the modern food production at the second biggest German pasta manufacturer.

Day 4: Strehla/Riesa – Meissen (approx. 36 km/28 km)
Today’s bike tour will take you along the pictur-esque wine villages located along the Elbe river, especially Diesbar-Seußlitz. From far away you can already see the landmark of the city of Meissen: the impressive castle hill with the cathedral and the Albrechtsburg castle. A visit to the world-famous Meissen porcelain factory is also a must. In the evening you should enjoy a good wine as you are in the heart of one of the smallest yet most distinguished winegrowing regions of Germany.

Day 5: Meissen – Dresden (approx. 30 km)
Enyour your last bike tour along the Elbe cycle path today and take a break while cycling along the vineyards around Radebeul. You arrive in the Florence of the Elbe, Dresden, which is beautifully located along the Elbe valley.

Day 6: Stay in Dresden
Use your day as to explore the city with its sights and historic background. Whether the famous Zwinger, the Semper Opera or the Court Church – a tour of the former royal residence by bicycle will take you past the most important sites.

Our Tip: We recommend an extra night in Dresden for a bike tour to the Saxon Switzerland. You will get back by local train to Dresden (approx. 45 km).

Day 7: Individual departure from Dresden or transfer service to Wittenberg
After your eventful and unforgettable bicycling holidays from Wittenberg to Dresden, you will now take your return path back home. You can of course always extend your active holidays with some extra nights in Dresden, Lutherstadt Wittenberg or other overnight locations along the route. We will be pleased to arrange additional nights for you.

My husband and I are Americans currently living in Japan. We have enjoyed cycling holidays for many years, and I'm so glad I found Augustus Tours during a Google search. The Wittenberg-Dresden itinerary was perfect for our needs, the communication via email was prompt, and the value was outstanding. This route is not technically difficult. Riding was flat (!!) and route maps were clear. We thoroughly enjoyed seeing the beautiful countryside, as well as the hamlets, towns, and cities.

Further information about our cycling holidays along the Elbe River Cycle Path

Cycle tours along Germany's most popular cycle path

Overwiev map of the Elbe River in GermanyThe Elbe flows through beautiful countryside. Its characteristic features include the towering Elbe Sandstone Massif, delightful riverbank meadows and impressive terrace vineyards. There are charming historical monuments along the river and lovely "old towns".

The Elbe, Germany's second largest river, flows through beautiful countryside. Its characteristic features include the towering Elbe Sandstone Massif, delightful riverbank meadows and impressive terrace vineyards in the region around Meissen. There are plenty of charming historical monuments along the river including magnificent castles, palaces and lovely, preserved, historical "old towns".

The cycle tours are fairly flat and follow the run of the river Elbe. The majority of the trails are in good condition and offer a wide range of cultural and leisure activities, making it ideal for travellers in every age group, for families and groups. The Elbe is one of the "slow" rivers. There is hardly any altitude, so it does not really matter whether you cycle upstream or downstream. However, the prevailing winds from the west and the countryside around the Elbe make the journey upstream preferable.
