From Marburg to Koblenz: Biking along the Lahn Cycle Path
Through the enchanting Lahn Valley to the "Gateway to the Middle Rhine"
The river Lahn originates in the middle of silent forests in the low mountain ranges Siegen-Wittgenstein, the most densely forested region of Germany. After the river has left the mountain country, the Lahn valley widens and passes into a hilly landscape. The river then runs through an open and fertile shire before the slopes come closer and form a gorge-like valley. In the last section the Lahn runs in tight turns to its junction with the Rhine at Lahnstein.

Day 1: Individual arrival in Marburg
When you have safely arrived and settled in Marburg, don’t hesitate and set out to explore the city! Marburg will surprise you. Even though its population is only a little over 73,000 inhabitants, the city has plenty to offer. Next to the famous Elisabeth’s Church, see the Marburg Castle, the Castle and parish Church of St. Mary or the Sphere Church from the end of 15th century. Apart from the churches and castles, you can also visit the architectonically fascinating Old University, Kilian’s chapel or the Green Mill.
Overnight stay in Marburg -
Day 2: Marburg – Wetzlar (approx. 54 km)
The first bike tour will lead you through the wide valley of the River Lahn, along idyllic lakes and surrounding countryside, into the town of Wetzlar. This university town is an important cultural, industrial and commercial center of the ten top centers in the state of Hessen. Most of the main attractions of the city are located in the old town, such as the Romanesque-gothic Cathedral, the museums and carefully restored half-timbered houses. In case you want to experience this town with more than just your eyes, we recommend you to taste the local culinary specialties "Dulges" or "Schmierchelskuche".
Overnight stay in Wetzlar -
Day 3: Wetzlar – Weilburg (approx. 32 - 40 km)
As you are leaving Wetzlar, notice the old medieval stone Lahn Bridge. This bridge was originally built in the 13th century and is thereby one of the oldest preserved bridges in the entire state of Hessen. Here you will have the opportunity to make a small detour and see the Mine Fortuna (additionally 8 km). The mine is now closed, but when open it used to extract iron ore in the form of hematite and limonite. It is now a Geo-information center in the national geo-parks of Westerwald–Lahn-Thaunus. The destination of you todays bike tour is the city of Weilburg. Dominating over the city stands the Weilburg Castle, today used as a museum.
Overnight stay in Weilburg -
Day 4: Weilburg – Limburg (approx. 40 km)
Today, River Lahn will lead you past many villages, winding its way through the landscapes of Hessen. You will have the advantage of biking on an asphalted path, gliding through the riverside with ease whilst enjoying the peaceful atmosphere of its surroundings. Your first stop is in Aumenau, a small and charming town welcoming you from the banks of River Lahn. Another opportunity for a break presents itself in Runkel, a town approx. 12 kilometres along the current from Aumenau. Here you can visit the ruin of the Runkel Castle originally from the 12th century. Waiting for you only a few more kilometers down the river is Limburg with your accommodation for tonight.
Overnight stay in Limburg -
Day 5: Limburg – Bad Ems (approx. 36 – 47 km)
Day six of your cycling holidays will take you away from all the traffic and into the untouched and pure nature of the River Lahn. More than other, the valley between Diez and Balduinstein is especially beautiful. See the hills by the riverbanks, seized by the vast forests, occasionally letting a rooftop or a chimney peek out through the crowns of their trees. A great place to take a break is in the town Obernhof. The local monastery Arnstein is a jewel on the river, looming over it as if it were its guard. A couple of kilometres further down the river you will have the possibility to visit the slightly younger Nassau Castle before you soon reach Bad Ems.
Overnight stay in Bad Ems -
Day 6: Bad Ems – Koblenz (approx. 17 - 46 km)
As you leave Bad Ems and bike along the river, the valley of the River Rhine will unfold itself before your eyes. If you wish to spend part of the day in Koblenz, you will bike straight to your final destination. However, if you are up for another adventure, you can continue your bike tour to Braubach and cycle via Boppart and St. Goar to the legendary UNESCO world heritage of Loreley. This detour is approximately 29 km long. You can enjoy the return journey to Koblenz by boat (Tuesday to Sunday only), or you can cycle to Koblenz and experience a castle tour by boat (Monday only).
