TOUR OF THE YEAR: Circular tour along the Saale, Ilm and Unstrut rivers from Weimar via Naumburg

Itinerary

• Day 1: Individual arrival in Weimar
  Welcome to Weimar – the city of poets and thinkers, Bauhaus architecture and the Weimar Republic. Upon arrival, follow in the footsteps of Goethe, Schiller and Herder and immerse yourself in classical Weimar. Anna Amalia will be happy to guide you through the city and tell you stories from times long past. The Bauhaus Museum is also worth a quick visit. In the evening, the German National Theatre offers a varied programme of events.

• Day 2: Weimar – Jena (approx. 23 km)
  At the beginning of your cycling holiday, you will leave Weimar heading south-east and cycle downstream towards Mellingen. There, you will turn off the Ilm Valley Cycle Route onto the Thuringian Town Chain Cycle Route and continue on to the optics and university town of Jena. Enjoy the view over the city from the JenTower or gaze at the stars in the worlds oldest operating planetarium, the Zeiss Planetarium Jena.

  Excursion to Kahla: Leuchtenburg Castle & porcelain
• Day 3: Jena – Naumburg (approx. 52 km)
  Todays cycle tour takes you through the Saale Canyon. Soon, the three Dornburg castles will appear on the left bank. Finally, the first vineyards of the Saale-Unstrut wine-growing region will appear on the horizon, accompanying you on todays stage of your cycle tour to the cathedral city of Naumburg.

• Day 4: Excursion to Wangen (approx. 40 km)
  You will take the regional train to Wangen (bicycles can be transported free of charge). From here, you will start todays cycle tour to Nebra, where the unique "Nebra sky disc" was found. Visit the multimedia visitor centre. Your cycle tour then continues to Freyburg, where you can take part in a guided tour of the Rotkäppchen sparkling wine cellars (all services mentioned are not included in the tour price). Afterwards, you cycle back to Naumburg.

• Day 5: Naumburg – Weimar (approx. 63 km)
  At first, you cycle upstream towards Bad Kösen with its famous graduation tower. In Kleinheringen, you leave the Saale Cycle Route and follow the gently rolling course of the Ilm river towards "Thuringian Tuscany", the spa town of Bad Sulza. Passing the bell town of Apolda, you finally return to the city of poets and thinkers: Weimar.

• Day 6: Day trip to Erfurt (approx. 51 km)
  On the last leg of your journey, you will cycle along the Thuringian chain of towns to Erfurt. Stroll through the streets of Erfurt to the fish market and the famous Krämerbrücke bridge. Discover Erfurt Cathedral, which houses the Gloriosa, the largest free-swinging bell in the world, before cycling back to Weimar. (Alternatively, you can take the train back, cost not included, bicycle transport free of charge, shortening the tour to approx. 29 km)

• Day 7: Individual departure
  After eventful bike tours on the Ilmtal and Saaleradweg cycle paths from Weimar, today you begin your return journey. We recommend extending your cycling holiday a little longer and adding a few days of cultural sightseeing in Weimar.
