Spree Cycle Path & Spreewald

The Spree rises from three sources in the tranquil Upper Lusatian Highlands. On the Spree Cycle Route, you will encounter pretty half-timbered houses, traditional towns such as Bautzen and Cottbus, as well as green, expansive parks and unspoilt heathland. In the Spreewald, the river disappears into countless streams. Explore the beauty and uniqueness of this region on our round trip. After leaving the Spreewald, the Spree Cycle Route leads past dense floodplain forests into a romantic lake landscape. After 406 km, the Spree flows into the Havel in Berlin-Spandau.

The Spree Cycle Route can rightly be described as a ‘cycle route of contrasts’. Experience the traditions of Upper Lusatia, Sorbian culture in the Spreewald and colourful city life at the end of your cycle tour in Berlin on a cycling holiday along the Spree.

Sights along the Spree Cycle Path

Numerous cycle paths, such as the Gurkenradweg (Cucumber Cycle Path), offer you the opportunity to discover the diverse landscape of the Spreewald on a cycling tour. With its extensive network of countless streams, the Spreewald makes your holiday a unique nature experience: perfect for a paddling trip or simply to relax. The Spreewald is also known as the home of the Sorbs, whose traditions you can learn about on your cycle tour through the Spreewald. Don't miss the chance to try the famous Spreewald gherkins as you cycle through beautiful parks and past impressive castles and palaces, such as Lübben Castle Island or the Bismarck Tower in Burg.

Along the Spree Cycle Route, you will pass through the Lusatian lignite mining area as well as romantic parks such as the Lusatian Boulder Park and Branitz Park, created by Prince Pückler. Take time out in the Spree Forest for a punting trip and enjoy coffee and cake – or a cucumber or two – as you glide through the floodplain landscape. Passing Schwielochsee and the cathedral city of Fürstenwalde, you will finally cycle along the Spree Cycle Route to Berlin-Köpenick. Once here, you can follow in the footsteps of the Captain of Köpenick. A trip to the state capital is also a good idea. If you want to take it easy after cycling along the Spree, visit the Müggelturm and enjoy the view over Lake Müggelsee.

• Location / Length: From Kottmar to Bautzen, the Spree Cycle Path runs through fairly hilly countryside. From Bautzen onwards, the approximately 365 km long cycle route runs on flat terrain and is therefore particularly suitable as a cycling destination for families and leisure cyclists.
• Difficulty level / track character: The Spree Cycle Path is characterised by paved, quiet and mostly well-signposted routes. In the Spree Forest, the extensive network of cycle paths and flat stages invite you to enjoy leisurely family cycling.
• Signage / Logo: The Spree Cycle Path is marked with a square logo showing the Brandenburg Gate in the foreground and a green mountain and a water fountain in the background, symbolising the source of the River Spree. Both areas of the logo are connected by a blue river, the Spree.
