• Monday, September 28: Exploring Trieste
  
  MORNING:
  
  09:30h: We start the day with three guided walking tours through Trieste. All tours will feature the citys most important sights, plus a special focus to choose from. All three tours will begin at the DoubleTree hotel. Price incl. tip:
  
  Guided walking tour Trieste

  • Religion - including visits to churches, incl. fee to the synagogue
  • Literature - including a visit to the Generali Insurance Archives (where Franz Kafka worked)
  • Archaeology - including a visit to the Hill San Giusto and its Castle

  AFTERNOON:
  
  12:30h: Following the walking tour, there is free time for lunch on your own (a list of restaurants will be in your digital document package) and leisure to further explore this wonderful city:
  
  A. We highly recommend taking the ferry to Muggia, a colorful Adriatic village with old Venetian roots, across the bay from Trieste: Explore Muggia’s picturesque historic center with narrow streets and colorful houses, enjoy the Cathedral Duomo dei Santi Giovanni e Paolo with its Baroque interior or the wonderful view from Castello di Muggia, originally built in medieval times. Also great restaurants for lunch – and ice-cream shops!!! – here.
  
  >> Ferries run regularly from the pier in Trieste to Muggia. The ferry stage is located approx. 15 minutes by foot from the hotels. The Ferry timetable will be included in your digital document package.
  
  B. Alternatively, you may wish to visit Miramare Castle, especially if you plan to join the “Option A” visit to the International Center for Theoretical Physics (ICTP) the following day. Miramare Castle combines romantic architecture, stunning sea views, and rich history. Its interiors are remarkably well preserved, showcasing original furniture, decorations, and artworks from the Habsburg era. The castle’s location, overlooking both the sea and parkland, makes it a unique blend of history, art and natural beauty. Lunch is not available at Miramare, although there is a small café there.

  C. You can also just stay in Trieste and visit one of the many museums such as the Revoltella Museum of Modern Art, the LETS Literature museum or the Museo Teatrale Carlo Schmidl, a museum for theatre and music history on the Canal Grande. A list of museums, their addresses and opening times will be included in your digital document package.
  
  EVENING:
  
  18:00h: All meet up at the DoubleTree hotel and travel together by bus for dinner at Antica Trattoria Suban.
  
  19:00-22:00h: Dinner at Antica Trattoria Suban
  Guest speaker: Prof. Christophe Solioz, a Geneva-based political analyst focusing on the Western Balkans and author of "Trieste: la littérature pour territoire". He will talk about "Re-Discover Trieste".
• Tuesday, September 29: Experience Science, Miramare and the Slovenian Karst region
  
  We enjoy a full day outside Trieste. The morning program will be followed by two options in Slovenias beautiful Karst region. Please note that there is no bus returning to Trieste at lunchtime, so you must book the full-day excursion with one option in the morning and one option in the afternoon.
  
  MORNING:
  
  09:00h: Meet at DoubleTree hotel for bus to the Grignano Marina Bay/Miramare
  
  OPTION A:
  
  09:30-11:00h: Abdus Salam International Center for Theoretical Physics (ICTP) where we learn about the significance of this renowned institution during an exclusive tour. An ancillary institution is the World Academy of Sciences (TWAS), its technical assistance arm.
  
  A UN organization, established in 1964 under IAEA and UNESCO auspices with Pakistan 1979 Physics Nobel prize Abdus Salam as first Director and Robert Oppenheimer as first Chair of the Scientific Council, ICTP promotes excellence at the frontiers of physical and mathematical sciences, fostering global inclusion for scientific resources and international cooperation through and for science. Founded in 1983, TWAS promotes the establishment of a global scientific community in the South.

  11:00-12:00h:
  Leisure stroll across the 22 hectare landscaped Castle Park and botanically rich and scenic grounds of Miramare Castle with its rare and exotic trees and plants, introduced by Archduke Maximilian from his many naval voyages.
  
  OPTION B:
  
  09:30-12:00h:
  A 90-minute long guided tour of Miramare Castle with its richly preserved interiors, the romantic, 19th century white stone Habsburg residence perched above the golf of Trieste and overlooking the Adriatic Sea, home to Archduke Maximilian of Habsburg-Lorraine (later emperor of Mexico) and his archduchess Carlotta, followed by a 60-minute individual leisure stroll across the 22 hectare landscaped Miramare Castle Park.
  
  AFTERNOON:
  
  After exploring the park, we will go by bus to the Slovenian Karst region, enjoying many beautiful views of the Gulf of Trieste on the way. (Bring Passports just in case ….) Once there, two afternoon options are offered with return to Trieste by approximately 17:00.
  
  Option 1:
  
  12:00h: A bus takes you from the Grignano Bay (down from Miramare Castle) to a winery near Štanjel in Slovenia (approx. 50 min)
  13:00h: Enjoy a wine tasting at the winery Vina Kobal including cold cuts (prosciutto and salami), cheese, olives and bread
  14:30h: Local guides pick you up for a guided walking tour of Štanjel and the Ferrari Gardens
  16:00h: Return to the hotel by bus (approx. 50 min)
  
  Option 2:
  
  12:00h: A bus takes you from Grignano Bay to a restaurant near the Botanical Gardens Sežana Villa Mirasasso in Slovenia (approx. 45 min)
  12:45h: Enjoy light lunch as 2-course menu incl. water and 1 glass of wine
  15:00h: Continue to Botanical Gardens Sežana Villa Mirasasso by coach (10 min)
  15:15h: Guided walking tour at Botanical Gardens, former ownership of the Trieste-based Scaramanga’ Greek merchant family)
  16:30h: Return to the hotel by bus (approx. 40 min)
  
  EVENING:
  
  19.00h: All meet up at the DoubleTree hotel and walk 20 minutes along the seafront to join the Gala Dinner at Yacht Club Adriaco
  
  19:30h: Gala dinner at an exclusive private location of the historical Yacht Club Adriaco, starting with an aperitif on the quai
  
  Guest speaker – Mr. Jens Peder Nielsen, MD of AdriaPort. A Hungarian state company holder of a concession to develop a port terminal in the Trieste international port.
