Architecture tour Hanseatic Cities
An Architectural Journey through Northern Germany
The European Route of Brick Gothic runs from Denmark across Germany's coast to Poland and tells of the trade and wealth of the Hanseatic cities. The architecture of the brick Gothic is to be found in Germany to this extent only in the north. Churches, city walls, palaces and castles, town houses and towers can be found, built in the small-scale stones. Discover the architectural features paired with the charming cities of the German Baltic coast.
Plan your architectural trip to the north and discover Wismar, Stralsund, Greifswald, Lübeck or the impressive Minster of Bad Doberan. Many of the places are even on the list of UNESCO World Heritage and have also gained international significance.
We have put together a proposal for a trip on the topic "Brick Gothic". The trip can be customized according to your wishes, in terms of programme and duration.

Day 1: Individual arrival to Lübeck
After your arrival to the beautiful city of Lübeck, we recommend a tour of the picturesque old town. The city center is surrounded by the waters of the Trave and a moat. During the tour you will get to know the most important sights of the Hanseatic city, such as the seven church towers (Lübeck is referred to as the "city of seven towers"), the impressive brick town houses and, of course, the famous Holstentor. A popular souvenir is the renowned Niederegger Marzipan.
Overnight stay in Lübeck -
Day 2: Excursion to Wismar
From Lübeck the city of Wismar is worth a visit. Located in the Wismar Bay, protected by the island of Poel, the Hanseatic city flourished in the Middle Ages and left charming town houses, which form a colorful ambience especially on the market square. The Hanseatic city is on the list of UNESCO World Heritage. The churches of the city center, such as St. Marys Church and St. Nicholas Church, are testimonies of brick Gothic.
Overnight stay in Wismar -
Day 3: Drive to Schwerin
The drive from Lübeck to Schwerin does not take long, so in the afternoon you can explore the beautiful city on Lake Schwerin as if you have all the time in the world. In addition to a tour, you should definitely plan to visit the castle. Give yourself a little more time here. The seat of the Landtag of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern for many centuries once was the residence of the Mecklenburg dukes. The castle is located on a small island and includes a castle garden. Since 1993, the Schwerin Castle Festival takes place in the summer here.
Overnight stay in Schwerin -
Day 4: Drive to Stralsund via Bad Doberan
The Minster of Bad Doberan is considered the "pearl of brick Gothic". Built in the 13th century as a Cistercian monastery, the high-Gothic church still impresses its visitors today. It has a high international rank, as it holds the richest equipment of all Cistercian churches from all over Europe. In addition, it served as the burial place of the Mecklenburg dukes and nobles for centuries. And that the soil conditions were considered a special challenge for the builders, makes the building even more amazing for us today. Continue to Stralsund, where you spend the night.
Overnight stay in Stralsund -
Day 5: Guided walking tour Stralsund and excursion to Greifswald
In addition to Wismar, the old town of Stralsund is on the list of UNESCO World Heritage Sites. During a tour you can experience the masterpieces of brick Gothic: St. Nikolai, St. Jakobi and St. Mary are just three of the many highlights. Tip: From the observation tower of the Marienkirche you have a wonderful view over the city and the Strelasund. Other attractions include the Gorch Fock and the impressive building of the OZEANEUM. In the afternoon we recommend a trip to Greifswald. The birthplace of the famous painter Caspar David Friedrich has a lovingly designed old town, the Pomeranian State Museum and the Museum Harbor. When it comes to brick Gothic, the visit of the monastery ruin Eldena (a frequently used motif by Caspar David Friedrich) should not be missed. In the small suburb Wieck a stroll on the promenade is highly recommended.
Overnight stay in Stralsund -
Day 6: Individual return journey or extension
Today you start the journey home or extend your stay. Depending on where you are coming from, you can supplement this tour with an extension in Berlin or Hamburg. Also other excursions, such as to Rügen Island, Usedom Island or the city of Rostock are possible. We are happy to help you to find ideas.
