2014-07-31 | Highlight 2015 - 10th Anniversary of the Benediction of the Church of Our Lady Dresden

It counts among the most impressive and magnificent church buildings in the world and, for sure, it is one of the most historic churches in Germany. Like large parts of Dresden, the Church of Our Lady (Frauenkirche) was destroyed by the bombardment in February 1945 and for many years its ruinChurch of Our Lady Dresden acted as memorial against war and destruction. In November 1989 a group of dedicated Dresden inhabitants founded the local initiative “Ruf aus Dresden” (“Call from Dresden”). When they went public in 1990 only a few believed in the reconstruction of the Dresden centrepiece. But thanks to the courage of the Dresden citizens and the support of fans from all over the world it turned out differently: In 2015 we can celebrate the 10th anniversary of the benediction of the Church of Our Lady.

For the benediction of the Church of Our Lady on 30th October 2005, the then Federal President Mr Horst Köhler found moving words: “The German writer Gerhart Hauptmann said in 1945: ‘Who has forgotten how to cry, learns it again in the demise of Dresden.’” 60 years later we can add: “Who has lost the confidence, reclaims it at the sight of the rebuilt of the Church of Our Lady!”
