The Kissinger Summer 2020
Anke Berndt
The history of the festival
Year after year, the Kissinger Summer enchants its approximately 30,000 visitors with performances by top-class orchestras and soloists. Graceful venues such as the Regentbau, the Kurtheater or the Kursaal in nearby Bad Brückenau will come to live with the wide variety of music styles from Baroque and classical, romantic and modern to chamber and vocal music. The festival's organisers paid particular attention to the cultural links between Eastern and Western Europe at the time of its creation, as Bad Kissingen was located close to the GDR border. In the early years there were therefore only Eastern European partner countries. The Kissinger Summer became a place of encounter of artists from West and East, especially from the respective partner countries. This changed after the fall of the Berlin Wall with partner countries now located all over Europe, North America and Asia. The Kissinger Summer has not only been a place of encounter for artists from West and East, but also become a stepping stone to some careers of many a well-known musician for example Igor Levit, Diana Damrau and David Garrett.
