42nd Oberammergau Passion Play 2020

The history of the Oberammergau Passion Play goes back to the year 1633. Plagued by pest and negative effects of the Thirty Years’ War, the inhabitants of Oberammergau decided to perform “the game of suffering, dying and rising of our Lord Jesus Christ” every ten years. The play was presented Whitsun 1634 for the first time.

Since then, the play’s power and aura have been unbroken. Ten months of rehearsal and hard practice had preceded those 102 days of play in 2010. The entire production lasts five hours and includes more than 2.000 actors – almost half of them being inhabitants of Oberammergau. On stage, the audience can follow the history of Jesus of Nazareth that starts with his entry into Jerusalem and ends with Jesus’s crucifixion and resurrection. The Passion Play’s venue is the impressive open-air stage of the eponymous theatre in Oberammergau. The play is divided into two parts – the first one will be performed in the afternoon whereas the second one takes place in the evening.

Following a ten-year rhythm, the next play will take place in 2020 from 16^th May till 4^th October. First preparations have been made so far. The management has already been determined in 2015. The detailed timetable and programme were published at ITB Berlin in 2017. Starting Ash Wednesday 2019, all actors will start letting their hair and beards grow. This ritual follows old tradition and shall prepare for the upcoming play in 2020. In October 2018, actors will be nominated. Rehearsals are to begin in autumn 2019.

Availability of tickets

We are happy to receive your ticket request for the months July, August and October in the categories 2-6. There is no more ticket category 1 available for all performance dates. No option to be waitlisted. The travel months of May, June and September 2020 are booked solid (independent of the ticket category) for groups.

AugustusTours does not have a private allocation of ticket arrangements, which we can offer you. We get in touch with the ticket operator every time we receive a request and check availabilities.

Arrangements and room allocation

Please decide on the 1-night or 2-night arrangement (available months: July, August and October).

Please send us a specific room allocation incl. rooms for drivers/tour leaders (no places free of charge). Please note that twin rooms are not bookable. We can of course forward this request but cannot guarantee. Single rooms are getting rare so please let us know if dbl rooms for sgl use would also be an option.

Due to the high demand there is a risk involved that the group may be split between hotels and cities. We cannot influence that and would like to point this out in advance.

 

Due to the high demand – and rapidly selling tickets – we recommend all interested parties to place their bookings as soon as possible because we are assuming that there will be no more group availabilities left by the end of 2018. So please think about this carefully and let your clients know that now is the time to place their bookings.
