2nd stop: Ohdruf and Lüneburg - Years of musical education

After the early death of his parents, he moved in with his older brother in Ohrdruf at the age of 10. From then on, he not only took over his education, but also laid the first musical foundations as his piano and organ teacher. At the age of 15, Bach received a scholarship to the Michaelis monastery school in Lüneburg and appeared as a choir singer. Three years later, he received his first position as a violinist in the court chapel of Duke Johann Ernst of Saxe-Weimar.

3rd stop: Arnstadt and Mühlhausen - First steps as an organist

Johann Sebastian Bach took up his first post as an organist at the New Church in Arnstadt. During this time, Bach not only wrote his first important organ compositions, but he also found himself repeatedly in conflict with the church authorities. At the age of 22, Bach escaped the restrictive conditions in Arnstadt and became organist at the Divi Blasii Church in Mühlhausen. In the same year, he married his cousin Maria Barbara in Dornheim near Arnstadt. Rising living costs and a lack of career prospects forced him to leave Mühlhausen a year later and move to the Weimar court.

His playing on the Silbermann organ in the Frauenkirche and numerous performances of his works testify to his admiration for Dresden. The Christmas Oratorio is now part of the regular repertoire during Advent, and his Passion works around Easter are also indispensable.
