Group tour suggestion: The Harz Mountains by Steam Train

Discover the Harz with the historic Harz Narrow-Gauge Railway.

On this journey you combine the fascination of the narrow-gauge railway experience with the beautiful landscape and the idyllic small towns of the Harz Mountains.

With a length of 131.24 km, the rail network of the Harz Narrow-Gauge Railway is the longest unbroken narrow-gauge railway network in Germany. The railway company's fleet of 25 steam engines, 6 railcars, 16 diesel engines and numerous historic railway carriages bear witness to a valuable technical treasure and make a ride on one of their trains an incomparable and unforgettable memory.

The Harz Narrow-Gauge Railway operates three lines: the Brocken, Selketal and Harzquer railway services. The network's home is in Wernigerode, a small town on the so-called German Timber-Frame-Road, which is picturesquely situated on the north slopes of the Harz Mountains.

In addition to the ride with the steam train you can take the Bodetal funicular to the Hexentanzplatz. With this you overcome a difference in altitude of about 250 metres over a distance of 750 metres.

Furthermore, you will experience the wonderful landscpase of the Mittelgebirge Harz in the middle of Germany. You get to know the small, sleepy towns such as Wernigerode and Quedlinburg with their half-timbered facades in narrow alleys, that seem to have sprung from a fairy tale. Besides take the opportunity to take a look into German and European history with a visit to the imperial city of Goslar.
