About fossils, Romans and knights

The idyllic Altmühltal is located in the heart of Bavaria. With an area of around 3000 square kilometres, it is the second largest nature park in Germany and offers a unique hiking experience with its varied mix of nature, culture and history.

Quality hiking in the Altmühltal has been a favourite since 2005: The Altmühltal Panorama Path leads from Gunzenhausen to Kelheim along the Altmühl through romantic rocky landscapes and historic towns on a varied 200-kilometre route. The path has even been certified as a ‘Wanderbares Deutschland’ quality path by the German Hiking Association.

Every hiking enthusiast will get their heart's desire on a hiking trip along the Altmühltal Panorama Path. In addition to the quality path, 20 other loop paths lead through the nature park, which are among the most beautiful circular hiking paths in the Altmühltal. The different levels of difficulty and routes offer plenty of variety. The paths are also well signposted, making it easy to discover this welcoming holiday paradise.

Hiking in the Altmühltal

The hiking tours in the Altmühltal are particularly characterised by their varied natural and cultural experiences. The Altmühltal Panorama Path leads through juniper heaths, floodplains and green forests, past rocky landscapes with striking rock formations. One of these is the impressive Twelve Apostles between Solnhofen and Eßlingen. History enthusiasts also get their fair share of enjoyment in the Altmühltal: the nature park is known worldwide for fossil finds in limestone and the discovery of the Urvogel Archaeopteryx. In various museums and quarries, you can find historical artefacts dating back to Roman and Celtic times and even to the Jurassic period.
