Hiking tour along the Altmühl Panorama Path from Treuchtlingen to Kelheim

Itinerary

• Day 1: Individual journey to Treuchtlingen
  You travel individually to Treuchtlingen. A walk through the town past the town palace is well worthwhile. There is a barefoot path in the spa gardens.
  Overnight stay in Treuchtlingen
• Day 2: Treuchtlingen - Pappenheim (approx. 8 km, walking time: approx. 3 h, + 143 m, - 144 m)
  A first short stage awaits you. Cross the Altmühl bridge to reach the historic old town centre of Pappenheim. Pay a visit to Pappenheim Castle and enjoy the marvellous view of the Altmühl valley. An extension of the tour (approx. 9.5 km) is possible.

• Day 3: Pappenheim - Dollnstein (approx. 25 km*, walking time: approx. 8 h, + 533 m, - 540 m)
  Todays stage takes you along varied paths to Solnhofen, the site where the Urvogel was found. Discover the impressive ‘Twelve Apostles’ rock formation near Esslingen before reaching Dollnstein in the Urdonau valley.
  Overnight stay in Dollnstein or Pappenheim (return journey to Pappenheim by train on your own, costs not included)
• Day 4: Dollnstein - Eichstätt (approx. 15 km, walking time: approx. 5 h, + 325 m, - 312 m)
  After a few steeper climbs, you will be rewarded today with a marvellous panorama over the Altmühltal valley, in keeping with the name of the hiking trail. Your destination is the episcopal town of Eichstätt.
  Overnight stay in Eichstätt
• Day 5: Eichstätt - Gungolding/Böhming (approx. 21/27 km*, walking time: approx. 5.5 - 7.5 h, + 396/545 m, - 396/569 m)
  You leave the town with the Willibaldsburg and walk through small villages. You cross the Gungoldinger Wachholderheide and spend the night below Arnsberg Castle.
  Overnight stay in Gungolding or Böhming
• Day 6: Gungolding/Böhming - Kinding (approx. 18/12 km*, walking time: approx. 3 - 5 h, + 478 m, - 493 m)
  The day begins with an ascent to the ‘Arnsberger Leite’ rock formation. The castle of the same name towers above Kipfenberg. After some time in the forest, you soon reach the small town of Kinding.

• Day 7: Kinding - Beilngries (approx. 18 km*, walking time: approx. 6 h, + 350 m, - 352 m)
  Unique rock formations and wonderful views await you today. At the Pfraundorfer See lake, you cross the banks of the Altmühl. From Hirschberg Castle, you can already see the Main-Danube Canal, which you follow for a short distance after a descent to Beilngries, the town with nine city towers.
  Overnight stay in Beilngries
• Day 8: Beilngries - Meihern (approx. 18 km**, walking time: approx. 6 h, + 311 m, - 296 m)
  You hike across the plateau of the Arzberg past Dietfurt on the Altmühl. The town (additional detour of approx. 2 km) with its reputation as a ‘Chinese town’ invites you to stroll around. Later you cycle along the edge of the forest to your overnight stay.
  Overnight stay in Meihern
• Day 9: Meihern - Riedenburg (approx. 20 km**, walking time: approx. 6 h, + 400 m, - 422 m)
  The first highlight after the ascent is Eggersberg Castle. Along the Altmühltal riverside path, it is not far to the castle town of Riedenburg.

• Day 10: Riedenburg - Kelheim (approx. 24 km**, walking time: approx. 7.5 h, + 521 m, - 532 m)
  The last hiking tour offers you plenty of variety: Prunn Castle, the second longest wooden bridge in Europe and the Danube gorge near Kelheim as well as an optional detour to Weltenburg Abbey (plus approx. 2 km with use of the ferry) form the crowning finale.

• Day 11: Individual departure
  After an unforgettable hiking trip along the Altmühltal Panorama Path, you start your return journey today. Alternatively, you can extend your hiking holiday with an extra night in Kelheim or other stage towns. We would be happy to book additional nights for you - just ask us!
