Lechweg-Path: From Lech am Arlberg to Füssen

Itinerary

• Day 1: Individual arrival to Lech am Arlberg
  Spend the afternoon strolling through the small village of Lech and enjoying the idyllic landscape. Explore the old parish church, built in 1390, or marvel at the surrounding Austrian mountains from the viewing platform on the Rüfikopf.
  Overnight stay in Lech am Arlberg
• Day 2: Circular walk lake Formarinsee (approx. 14 km, walking time: approx. 4.5 hours, + 50 m, - 500 m)
  In the morning, the hiking bus will take you to picturesque Lake Formarinsee, where the Lechweg-path starts at an altitude of about 1,793 metres. Take in the stunning view of the sparkling mountain lake, formed each spring by the melting snow from the surrounding mountains. Then follow the scenic Lech-riverside path back to Lech am Arlberg.

• Day 3: Lech am Arlberg – Steeg/Surroundings (approx. 11 km, walking time: approx. 4 hours, + 300 m, - 300 m)
  At the beginning of this stage, you will hike high above the river, passing through peaceful farmland and lush mountain meadows, before reaching the fascinating Lech Gorge, where you can enjoy stunning views of the wild landscape.The trail then continues gently uphill through the forest to the Walser village of Warth. Here, you will find Vorarlbergs highest alpine dairy and butchers shop, as well as a natural swimming lake, where you can take a break. From there, you’ll cross the Krumbach stream into Gehren, officially entering Tyrolean soil. The path then leads you up to Lechleiten, where the Panorama Trail begins. Enjoy the fantastic views of the Lech Valley and the magical turquoise river far below. Finally, numerous winding paths lead you down to the riverbank. From here, the trail passes through small hamlets until you arrive in the pretty village of Steeg. Alternatively, you can take the bus from Warth to Steeg.

• Day 4: Steeg/Surroundings – Elbigenalp (approx. 18 km, walking time: approx. 5 hours, + 380 m, - 400 m)
  Enjoy a leisurely hike along the Jochweg-path, following the banks of the Lech until you reach the beautiful village of Holzgau. The village is renowned for its many ornately painted houses, which lend the place a truly unique charm. A particular highlight of this trip is crossing one of the longest and most spectacular pedestrian suspension bridges in Europe. Afterwards, the trail leads you through meadows and woodland paths to Elbigenalp. As the geographical heart of the Lech Valley, this village is a cultural and artisanal hub, famous for its long-standing tradition of woodcarving.

• Day 5: Elbigenalp – Stanzach (approx. 20 km, approx. 5.5 hours, +400 m, -550 m)
  Today’s journey takes you through a stunning nature reserve to Häselgehr. We highly recommend visiting the parish church here; it is well worth seeing for its magnificent interior and impressive organ. Afterwards, continue your hike up to the Doser Waterfall. This spot is wrapped in mystery, as the water famously disappears every November only to begin flowing again in April—a natural phenomenon that remains the subject of many local myths and legends to this day. Following a high-altitude path with breathtaking views of the "wild river," you will finally reach Stanzach, an idyllic village situated amidst a stunning mountain landscape.

• Day 6: Stanzach – Höfen/Surroundings (approx. 19 km, walking time: approx. 5 hours, + 50 m, - 150 m)
  On this stage, the Lech reveals its wild side once again. You will hike through a rugged river landscape, passing the Lechzopf towards Forchach, where another suspension bridge beckons adventurous hikers. The route then takes you across the Johannesbrücke-bridge and through the Moosberg-nature reserve to Weissenbach. After crossing the Rotlech river, the path follows gentle riverside trails until you finally reach the quiet, peaceful village of Höfen.

• Day 7: Höfen/Surroundings – Füssen (approx. 11 km, walking time: approx. 4 hours, + 300 m, - 300 m)
  You begin today’s trek along the panoramic trail, heading up to a stunning viewpoint high by the Costaries Chapel. Passing the shimmering Frauensee lake, the route continues into the Pflacher Au. Here, you can enjoy an impressive panoramic view of the wetlands near the river from the ‘Vogelturm’ viewing platform, a wooden structure approximately 20 metres high. In this unique bird sanctuary, you can discover an astonishing variety of species and natural diversity in a small area, while the Lech river seems close enough to touch. From Pflach, you can take the bus to Füssen. Alternatively, you can continue your hike, leaving the Lech behind and walking uphill through meadows and forests across the border to Bavaria. Soon you will see the fairytale castles of Neuschwanstein and Hohenschwangau in the distance! The impressive Lechfall waterfall marks the end of the Lechweg trail. To round off your journey, the spa town of Füssen offers the chance to visit the Royal Castles.
