Hiking tours around the Zugspitze

Enchanting peaks and blissful trails around the roof of Germany

The German Bavarian part of the Alps is quite beautiful, something to be seen once in life. So why not take a journey around the highest mountain in this part of the Alps. You will discover green meadows, snow-covered peaks and stunning waterfalls.

Mount Zugspitze, 2962m high, is easily reached by taking a cable car. But a truly wonderful week you will spend walking around the bottom, sleeping in little towns and picnicking for lunch.

Itinerary

  • Day 1: Individual arrival to Garmisch-Partenkirchen/ Surrounding
This cute town is famous for the winter sport, which plays an absolute huge here. And even if it is summer, take some time to stroll through the alleys and small roads. Get accustomed to the Bavarian style of living and maybe get your first “Brotzeit” here.
    Overnight stay in Garmisch-Partenkirchen
  • Day 2: Garmisch-Patenkirchen – Mittenwald/Klais (approx. 16 km, walking time: approx. 5 hrs)
Finally your journey around the mountain Zugspitze started. One of the highlights of the tour is the Partnachklamm (Partnach gorge), the entrance fee is not included, but it will be totally worth your time and money. Where else can you walk between sheer rock walls with a river under you? Later you will walk along peaceful meadows towards Klais or Mittenwald. If you want to, you can rush one part of your journey by taking the tram, but the fee is equally not included.
Overnight stay in Mittenwald or Klais
  • Day 3: Mittenwald/Klais – Leutasch (approx. 14 km, walking time: approx. 4 hrs)
The next part of your journey goes along the Leutscher Ache. It was cut out of the rock and the way on wooden planks is a bit adventurous, but also it is really safe on them. On your way to Leutasch Valley the great big massif of Wetterstein throws its shadow over lovely meadows and your way. Finally in Leutasch you can relax your feet or spend some additional time on your feet taking a stroll through the town to get to know the Tyrolean style of living
    Overnight stay in Leutasch
  • Day 4: Day off or lake tour (approx. 9 km, walking time: approx. 3 hrs)
You can use today to rest a bit and gather new strength or you can take a nice hike on the "Jakobsweg" or to the great view of the Brunschkopf..
    Overnight stay in Leutasch
  • Day 5: Leutasch – Ehrwald (approx. 17 km, walking time: approx. 5 hrs)
You have to take the bus to the nature paradise Gaistal, where todays journey will start. On meadows along the road you will be able to see some livestock in form of cute Haflinger horses, cattle and Scottish Galloways. Keep walking on the Ganhofer path towards the Ehrwalder Alm. The Bavarian author Ludwig Ganghof has spent quite some time in this valley and a lot of his novels are inspired by it. Later you can take the cable car down into the valley and walk further on to the Ehrwalder Alm, where you will spend your night.
    Overnight stay in Ehrwald
  • Day 6: Ehrwald – Garmisch-Partenkirchen/surrounding (approx. 12 km, walking time: approx. 4,5 hrs)
Now with the mountain Zugspitze in direct view, walk towards it. You will get to the Eibsee view, which is a famous panoramic view. After making this memory unforgettable, take the train back to Garmisch-Partenkirchen, where your journey stared and will end.
    Overnight stay in Garmisch-Partenkirchen
  • Day 7: Individual departure
