Itinerary

  • Day 1: Individual arrival to Tarvisio
    Your journey begins in the charming mountain town of Tarvisio, nestled among the peaks of the Carnic Alps in the border triangle of Italy, Austria and Slovenia.

  • Day 2: Circular walk Tarvisio "Monte Lussari" (approx. 15 km, walking time: approx. 4.5 hours, + 450 m, - 450 m)
    Your walking holiday in Italy begins with a scenic cable car ride up to the summit of Monte Lussari, where you can explore the renowned pilgrimage site before setting off on an ascent to the striking summit of Cima Cacciatore at over 2,000 metres. At the top, you are rewarded with breathtaking panoramic views across the Carnic and Julian Alps. After a brief detour to the rustic Malga Lussari mountain hut, you return by cable car to the valley for a leisurely stroll along the Alpe Adria path back to Tarvisio.

  • Day 3: Tarvisio – Gemona "Crossing the summits" (approx. 14 km, walking time: approx. 4.5 hours, +400 m, -400 m)
    After a restful night, a short bus transfer brings you to Venzone, one of the most charming villages in Italy. Take time to explore its impressive cathedral and the historic medieval curtain walls. Your walk continues past two mountain chapels, leading you towards the rugged scree area of the Rivoli Bianchi. Your route then leads you along the cliffs of the Julian Alps as you ascend to the summit of Monte Cumieli, where you will be rewarded with magnificent panoramic views. The descent takes you past the fortress of Ercole and the small lake of Minisine before continuing down to Gemona, where your day comes to an end.

  • Day 4: Gemona – Udine "Panorama of Mountains" (approx. 13 km, walking time: approx. 5 hours, + 800 m, - 800 m)
    Today’s walk in the Friuli region leads you along a panoramic path that gently traverses the mountainside. Far below, the vast plains of the Tagliamento River unfold at your feet, offering truly spectacular views throughout the day. In the morning, take time to explore the charming historic centre of Gemona, where a visit to the cathedral is highly recommended. You then continue to Artegna, perfect for a stop at a traditional Italian café and a tour of the castle. Afterwards, you take the train to Udine, where you will spend the night.

  • day 5: Udine – Gradisca d´Isonzo „The wine hike“ (approx. 17 km, walking time: approx. 4.5 hours, +350 m, -350 m)
    After a short train ride to Cormons, you set off along a historic path towards Monte Quarin. From here, the Collio wine-growing region stretches out in the distance. Continuing through grapevines, you make your way to the Red Lakes Nature Reserve, before passing through sleepy towns on the way to the village of Farra. The day concludes with a relaxed stretch along quiet farm tracks, leading you to Gradisca, which is beautifully set beside the turquoise waters of the Isonzo River.

  • Day 6: Gradisca d´Isonzo – Triest „Coastal Trails“ (approx. 17 km, walking time: approx. 5 hours, + 350 m, - 150 m)
    Start the day with a train journey to the coast, where you will set out on an inviting coastal walk. Enjoy dramatic cliff-top views over the shimmering Adriatic Sea as you head towards Trieste. From here, you can enjoy excellent views of the busy shipping traffic in the harbour. En route, you will pass through Prosecco and the elegant Miramare Castle before continuing along a magnificent panoramic path to Opicina. A bus transfer will then take you down into the heart of Trieste, where you will spend the night.

  • Day 7: Circular Walk Triest „Val Rosandra“ (approx. 11 km, walking time: approx. 4.5 hours, + 450 m, - 450 m)
    Today, you explore the stark beauty of the rocky Karst region on the Slovenian border. You will follow a section of a former railway line to reach the village of Draga, before ascending to the ridge of Monte Stena. From the summit cross, you will be rewarded with your first breathtaking glimpse of Trieste. The route then continues to a dramatic viewpoint perched above the cliffs, before reaching Rifugio Premuda, the lowest Alpine Club hut. After this rewarding day on the trail, a bus will take you back to Trieste, where you can enjoy the final evening of your walking holiday at a relaxed pace in this fantastic port city.

  • Day 8: Individual departure or extension

Arrival & Departure

Tips on how to get to Tarvisio

Arrival by train:
Tarvisio is easily accessible by train. When you arrive, you can take a bus or a taxi to your hotel. Current timetable information and price information can be found at www.bahn.de.

Arrival by car:
You can reach Tarvisio via the A8 from Germany. Follow the A10 and A2 through Austria to reach the A23 in Italy, which leads you directly to Tarvisio and your accommodation. On www.parkopedia.de you will find a good overview of public parking lots and parking garages.

Arrival by plain:
Flights are available to Klagenfurt and Trieste. From Trieste, you can reach Tarvisio by train in 2.5 hours, and then take a local bus or taxi to your hotel.
