A series of highlights await you along the historic hiking route which you will discover in eight stages left and right of the river Elbe.

Your hiking tour takes you through valleys, gorges and forests, as well as up to breath-taking vantage points on rock formations such as the Bastei, the Brandaussicht or the Goldsteinaussicht. Each season of the year offers a unique natural spectacle along the Malerweg trail. In spring the sound of singing birds will accompany you during your hikes and you can marvel at the beautiful spring snowflakes in the Polenztal. In summer refreshing shady forests and bright rapeseed fields will await you and in autumn you can expect a colourful splendour of deciduous trees.

On this deluxe hiking tour selected luxury accommodations along the Malerweg trail offer relaxation and energy for your eventful daily stages. Reside and sleep like a prince elector in exclusive hotels and treat yourself with a regional dish, a typical Bohemian beer or Saxon wine.

Day 2: Pirna-Liebethal – Rathen health resort (approx. 17 km, walking time: approx. 5.5 h)
In the morning of your first hiking stage you will take the bus from Pirna to Pirna-Liebethal to the starting point of the Malerweg trail. From here you will walk through three wild and romantic ravines (Liebethaler Grund, Zscherregrund and Wehlgrund) characterised by a lush and diverse flora. Continuing via the town Wehlen, calmly situated on the Elbe River, you will reach the probably most famous vantage point of Saxon Switzerland – the Bastei Bridge. Enjoy the breath-taking views over the Elbe Valley and the Table Mountains of the Elbe Sandstone Mountains before you descent into the Amselgrund to Rathen.

Day 3: Rathen – Hohnstein health resort (approx. 8 km, approx. 3.5 h)
After a restful night in your luxurious accommodation in Rathen the short hiking stage will lead you to the village Hohnstein. You will pass the waterfall Amselfall and the Hockstein rock with its wonderful viewpoint. Descending through the Wolfsschlucht gorge you will get to the lovely Polenztal valley and via the Schindergraben you will reach the village Hohnstein with its castle from the 14th century.

Day 4: Hohnstein – Altendorf (approx. 15 km, approx. 6 h), overnight stay in Bad Schandau
On today's hiking route you will walk again through the Schindergraben to continue along the Malerweg trail. You will pass the grotto Gautschgrotte which is roofed by a 40 metres wide and 18 metres high rock. Then you will hike to the Brand viewpoint, also called the "Balcony of Saxon Switzerland". After walking down roughly 800 steps into the Tiefen Grund gorge and passing Waitzdorf you will soon arrive in Altendorf. From here a bus takes you to your next accommodation in Bad Schandau where you spend a night in a hotel with a luxurious spa area.

Day 5: Altendorf – Schrammsteine – Neumannmühle (approx. 17 km, approx. 6.5 h), overnight stay in Bad Schandau
Today's stage starts with the bus ride back to Altendorf from where you continue your hiking tour through the gorge Dorfbachklamm to the Schrammsteine massif. This elongated and heavily ragged rock formation offers stunning views. After passing the Schammtor gate, a steep ascent via steel ladders leads you to the Schrammstein view point and you will cross the Schrammstein massif along the Gratweg, a ridge path. Following the Affensteinweg trail you will reach Lichtenhain Waterfall and then continue to the Kuhstall Cave, a natural rock arch. After a descent into the Kirnitzschtal valley, you will soon reach today’s destination the Neumannmühle, a technical monument. The bus will take you through the Kirnitzschtal valley back to Bad Schandau.

Day 6: Neumannmühle – Schmilka (approx. 14 km, approx. 6 h)
To continue the hiking tour along the Malerweg Trail, you will first take the bus back to Neumannmühle. From there you will explore the region called "Hintere Sächsische Schweiz" with Zeughaus and Goldstein view point before climbing up to Großer Winterberg, with 556 metres the second highest mountain in Saxon Switzerland. In your accommodation in Schmilka you can let the hiking day end with a tasty multi-course dinner (included in the price).

Day 7: Schmilka – health resort Gohrisch (approx. 17 km, approx. 6.5 h)
Today you can enjoy views of the Schrammstein massif, where you hiked through two days ago, from the other side of the Elbe River. The health resort Gohrisch will await you with another high quality hotel at the end of the hiking stage.

Day 8: Gohrisch – Königstein health resort (approx. 9 km, approx. 4 h)
Your hiking route will take you first to the Pfaffenstein massif where you will reach the top via the narrow Nadelöhr - a steep ascent featuring steel staircases and ladders. An imposing view over to Lilienstein and Königstein fortress will await you. After catching a glimpse of the impressive fortress from the distance, the Malerweg trail now leads you to the town Königstein with its fortress enthroning above the town. The short hiking stage will give you plenty of time to explore the tourist attraction.
