Saxon Switzerland / Elbe Sandstone Mountains
Circular tour Elbe Sandstone Mountains
More information about our walking holidays in Saxon Switzerland
The German part of the Elbe Sandstone Mountains located a few miles from Dresden in the southeast of Germany is also known as Saxon Switzerland. This nick name "Saxon Switzerland" was given by two Swiss painters who were impressed by the similarity of the area with their own country.
During your walking holidays you will see bizarre rock formations, massive woods, plateaus and valleys of various shapes alongside the Elbe River inclusive famous natural and cultural sights such as the "Fortress Koenigstein", the "Barbarine" and "Pfaffenstein" rocks and the well known Rock Arch Pravčická Brána in Bohemian Switzerland (the largest natural stone bridge on the European continent).
Walking along the Elbe Sandstone Mountains Malerweg Trail
The Malerweg trail is one of the most famous ones in the Elbe Sandstone Mountains. This circular trail is 112 km long and leads you along the Bastei Bridge, the health resort Bad Schandau, the Lichtenhain Waterfall, the Fortress Königstein back to its destination Pirna.
As the name of Malerweg trail (literal translation: Painter's trail) already suggests, you hike along the tracks of famous painters as e.g. Casper David Friedrich and Ludwig Richter. Both were inspired by the magnificent view from the Elbe Sandstone Mountains and created unique paintings back in the 18th century.
