In the far southeast of Germany the rather small but very famous Elbe Sandstone Mountains are located. Just a stone’s throw from Saxony’s capitol Dresden, you can immerge into a magic world of bizzare rock formations, deep valleys, historical fortresses and the river landscape of the Elbe.

The Elbe Sandstone Malerweg trail, a 112 km long circular walking route, leads you from Pirna along the Bastei Bridge, the Brandstein view point, the Schrammsteine massif, the Fortress Königstein and charming villages back to its origin Pirna.

The region is also called "Saxon Switzerland" and the name dates back to the 18th century when the Swiss painters Anton Graff and Adrian Zingg felt reminded of their landscape back home. Later, Romantics such as Caspar David Friedrich and Ludwig Richter were inspired by the fascinating views in the Elbe Sandstone Mountains and created unique works of art.

So you will hike along the tracks of famous painters as the name Malerweg Trail suggests (literal translation: Painter’s Path or Trail). Set out to experience the fairytale-like landscape of the Elbe Sandstone Mountains yourself!

This walking trip is not recommendable for travellers with mobility impairments.

Day 1: Individual arrival at Pirna
You travel individually to the city of Pirna, known as the ‘gateway to Saxon Switzerland’. We recommend you to take a walk through the city’s historic centre with its medieval alleys and numerous artfully decorated town houses. The city is also located close to Dresden and can be reached conveniently by public transport from there.

Day 2: Pirna-Liebethal – City of Wehlen/ Rathen (approx. 12/17 km, walking time: approx. 4 5,5 hrs)
In the morning, you will take the bus to the starting point of the Malerweg trail. During your first hiking stage you will walk through three wild and romantic ravines. Experience one of the special features of the natural landscape in the Elbe Sandstone Mountains: favoured by the microclimate, you will encounter a lush and varied flora in the deep gorges along the Malerweg Trail. Today’s destination is Wehlen or the spa resort Rathen, both quiet little towns situated on the Elbe River.

Day 3: Wehlen/Rathen – Hohnstein (approx. 13/8 km, walking time: approx. 3,5 5 hrs)
From Wehlen it is not too far to the probably most famous viewpoint of Saxon Switzerland – the Bastei Bridge. We recommend you to start the walking tour early in the morning to appreciate the stunning view fairly undisturbed. Then you will descend into the Amselgrund and head for the second highlight of your walking tour – the Hockstein rock. From here you have a wonderful view to Hohnstein with its castle. Through the Wolfsschlucht gorge you climb down into the lovely Polenztal valley and via the Schindergraben you will reach Hohnstein.

Day 4: Hohenstein – Altendorf/Kirnitzschtal (approx. 15 km, walking time: approx. 6 hrs)
Today you will hike to the Brand viewpoint which is also called the ‘Balcony of Saxon Switzerland’. Enjoy the phenomenal panoramic view by trying a local delicacy served in the restaurant Brandsteinbaude. You will continue the tour by taking roughly 800 steps down into the ‘Tiefen Grund’ gorge. Passing Waitzdorf you will reach Altendorf or continue along the Panorama trail to the Kirnitzschtal valley.

Day 5: Altendorf/Kirnitzschtal – Schrammsteine – Neumannmühle (approx. 17 km, walking time: 6.5 hrs)
One of the highlights today is the Schrammsteine massif, an elongated and heavily ragged rock formation offering stunning views. After passing the Schammtor gate, a steep ascent via steel ladders leads you to the Schrammstein view point and you will cross the Schrammstein massif along the Gratweg, a ridge path. Following the Affensteinweg trail you will reach Lichtenhain Waterfall and then continue to the Kuhstall Cave, a natural rock arch. After a descent into the Kirnitzschtal valley, you will soon reach today’s destination the Neumannmühle, a technical monument. The bus will take you through the Kirnitzschtal valley to your accommodation.

Day 6: Neumannmühle – Großer Winterberg – region Schmilka/ Reinhardtsdorf (approx. 14 22 km, walking time: approx. 6  8 hrs)
You start the day taking the bus back to Neumannmühle to continue the walking tour along the Malerweg Trail. Explore the region called "Hintere Sächsische Schweiz" with Zeughaus and Goldstein view point before climbing up to Großer Winterberg, with 556 metres the second highest mountain in Saxon Switzerland. On the descent to Schmilka we recommend a short detour to the Kipphorn view point. After crossing the Elbe River by ferry in Schmilka (additional costs) you walk up steps to Schöna and soon reach your today's destination.

Day 7: Region Schmilka/ Reinhardtsdorf – Gohrisch (approx. 9  17 km, walking time: 4 6.5 hrs)
Today you can enjoy the view of the Schrammstein massif from the other side of the Elbe River. Before you will reach the spa town Gohrisch, you will crest the two table mountains Papststein and Gohrisch. Capture the different spectacular views of the landscape of Elbe Sandstone Mountains from the respective peaks.

Day 8: Gohrisch – Königstein/Weißig (approx. 9/16 km, walking time: approx. 4/5.5 hrs)
The Malerweg trail will take you first to the Pfaffenstein massif. You will reach the top via the narrow Nadelöhr, a steep ascent featuring steel staircases and ladders and an imposing view over to Lilienstein and Königstein fortress will await you. After catching a glimpse of the impressive fortress from the distance, the Malerweg trail now leads you through the town of Königstein and to the fortress. The short hiking stage will give you plenty of time to explore the tourist attraction.

Day 9: Königstein/Weißig – Pirna (approx. 20/13 km, walking time: approx. 7.5/5 hrs)
Passing Thürmsdorf and Weissig, the last hiking stage on the Malerweg trail leads you to the Rauenstein massif. From the top you can catch sight of the Bastei Bridge on the other side of the Elbe River. The descent along the ridge will lead you to Pötzscha. Via Naundorf and Obervogelgesang you will return to the starting point of your walking tour – Pirna.

The German Bavarian part of the Alps is quite beautiful, something to be seen once in life. So why not take a journey around the highest mountain in this part of the Alps. You will discover green meadows, snow-covered peaks and stunning waterfalls.

Mount Zugspitze, 2962m high, is easily reached by taking a cable car. But a truly wonderful week you will spend walking around the bottom, sleeping in little towns and picnicking for lunch.

This hiking trip is not recommendable for travellers with mobility impairments.

Day 1: Individual arrival to Garmisch-Partenkirchen
This cute town is famous for the winter sport, which plays an absolute huge here. And even if it is summer, take some time to stroll through the alleys and small roads. Get accustomed to the Bavarian style of living and maybe get your first “Brotzeit” here.

Day 2: Garmisch-Patenkirchen – Mittenwald/Klais (approx. 16 km, walking time: approx. 5 hrs)
Finally your journey around the mountain Zugspitze started. One of the highlights of the tour is the Partnachklamm (Partnach gorge), the entrance fee is not included, but it will be totally worth your time and money. Where else can you walk between sheer rock walls with a river under you? Later you will walk along peaceful meadows towards Klais or Mittenwald. If you want to, you can rush one part of your journey by taking the tram, but the fee is equally not included.

Day 3: Mittenwald/Klais – Leutasch (approx. 14 km, walking time: approx. 4 hrs)
The next part of your journey goes along the Leutscher Ache. It was cut out of the rock and the way on wooden planks is a bit adventurous, but also it is really safe on them. On your way to Leutasch Valley the great big massif of Wetterstein throws its shadow over lovely meadows and your way. Finally in Leutasch you can relax your feet or spend some additional time on your feet taking a stroll through the town to get to know the Tyrolean style of living

Day 4: Day off or lake tour (approx. 9 km, walking time: approx. 3 hrs)
You can spend the day relaxing and just not walking or you could do the opposite and go for a small side journey around Seefeld (a lake). You could also go on an excursion to one of the Seefelder summits. Here you have the choice of plain walking or lazily going by cable car.

Day 5: Leutasch – Ehrwald (approx. 17 km, walking time: approx. 5 hrs)
You have to take the bus to the nature paradise Gaistal, where todays journey will start. On meadows along the road you will be able to see some livestock in form of cute Haflinger horses, cattle and Scottish Galloways. Keep walking on the Ganhofer path towards the Ehrwalder Alm. The Bavarian author Ludwig Ganghof has spent quite some time in this valley and a lot of his novels are inspired by it. Later you can take the cable car down into the valley and walk further on to the Ehrwalder Alm, where you will spend your night.

Day 6: Ehrwald – Garmisch-Partenkirchen (approx. 12 km, walking time: approx. 4,5 hrs)
Now with the mountain Zugspitze in direct view, walk towards it. You will get to the Eibsee view, which is a famous panoramic view. After making this memory unforgettable, take the train back to Garmisch-Partenkirchen, where your journey stared and will end.

Day 7: Individual departure
We hope you enjoyed your journey around the bottom of the mountain Zugspitze. Maybe we can attract you with a few additional nights in Garmisch-Partenkirchen and a travel up the mountain. Or another journey somewhere? We will help you planning and booking so you can enjoy your vacation.

This hiking trip is not recommendable for travellers with mobility impairments.

[ettappen] =>

Day 10: Individual departure
Take your time to review your memories of the walking holidays along the Elbe Sandstone Mountains Malerweg Trail before departure. You are very welcome to prolong your journey with additional nights in Dresden and enjoy the cultural flair of the baroque city. We would be delighted to book additional overnight stays for you in Dresden or in other towns along the trail.

Look forward to a circular hiking tour through the Upper Black Forest – Germany’s warmest region between the North Sea and the Alps. Between the Titisee and Bernau, the region presents its most beautiful sights as e.g. cool glacial lakes, deep valleys and summits with spectacular views.

The hiking region of the Black Forest surely is an impressive area: stunning summits alternate with deep valleys and deep blue mountain lakes and thus turn this region into one of Germany’s most attractive hiking destinations. This hiking tour starts at the Titisee and leads you up to the Feldberg Mountain, which has the highest peak of the entire Black Forest.

You continue your walking holidays through the winter sport village of Todtnauberg until you reach the beautiful high valley Bernau. Before returning to Lake Titisee at the end of this hiking week, you pass through quiet mountain valleys until you arrive at the shores of Lake Schluchsee.

This hiking tour is not recommendable for travellers with mobility impairments.

[ettappen] =>

Day 1: Individual arrival to Saig
After your arrival, get into the mood of your upcoming Upper Black Forest hiking tour while taking a walk through the climatic health resort of Saig.

Day 2: Saig – Hinterzarten (approx. 16 km, walking time: approx. 4 – 5 hrs)
The first stage of your walking holidays in the Upper Black Forest leads you away from the plateau of Saig right through the calm forest of the nature reserve Rotmeer. After having passed the valley of Bärental, you reach a hiking trail, which leads you steeply uphill. Hiking on one of the most popular hiking trails in the Black Forest called Westweg, you continue through swampy countryside until you arrive at the village Hinterzarten.

Day 3: Hinterzarten – Feldberg (approx. 16 km, walking time: approx. 4 – 5 hrs)
Leaving Hinterzarten behind, you hike to the ice-age glacial lake Feldsee. After you had a pleasant break at this picturesque site you follow a narrow trail up to Seehalde near Präg, which is one of the biggest block dumps in the Southern Black Forest. A quiet mountain inn on top of the Feldberg awaits you for today’s night.

Day 4: Feldberg – Todtnauberg (approx. 17 km, walking time: approx. 4 – 5 hrs)
On today’s hiking tour you pass by fragrant flowers and herb meadows up to the summit of the Feldberg. Enjoy this phenomenal view from the Feldberg’s peak after having had a steep but short ascent. The Feldberg is the highest summit you can find in the Black Forest. Keep following the Westweg trail and descent smoothly into the vivacious village of Todtnauberg.

Day 5: Todtnauberg – Bernau im Schwarzwald (approx. 18 km, walking time: approx. 5 – 6 hrs)
The hiking tour continues downhill the southern slope of the Feldberg until you reach Todtnau. Enjoy stunning views over the surrounding area while you ride up the mountain Hasenhorn on a chairlift. From up here you walk alongside the Prägbach creek passing waterfalls until you arrive at the high valley Bernau. This high valley counts to one of the most beautiful ones in the Black Forest due to its spacious forest and meadow landscape.

Day 6: Bernau im Schwarzwald – Schluchsee (approx. 23 km, walking time: approx. 5 hrs)
The highlight of your hiking holidays is simultaneously the longest stage through the southern area of the Black Forest. Passing a former silver mine, you continue todays hike along the Schluchtensteig trail – another very popular hiking trail in the Black Forest. This trail leads you up until you reach the mountain hut Krummenkreuz. Here, it is worth taking a break. Before you are able to enjoy the spectacular view over Lake Schluchsee, let the beautiful forest landscape once more work its magic. The largest lake in the Black Forest and the health resort Schluchsee are today’s travel destination.

Day 7: Schluchsee – Saig (approx. 23 km, walking time: approx. 4 – 5 hrs)
Look forward to your last and calm stage of your walking holidays. Along the shores of the Schluchsee you hike to a small village called Falkenau. One more steep ascent until you have finally reached Titisee – the starting point of your circular hiking tour through the Black Forest.

The rather small, but therefore very famous Elbe Sandstone Mountains are located in the far East of Germany. There, just a glimpse away from Saxony’s capitol Dresden, you can immerge into a magic world of impressive rock formations, deep valleys, historical fortresses and the river landscape of the Elbe River. The unique rock formations of Elbe Sandstone Mountains have been fascinating people from all over the world at all times. There, poets and painters once found inspiration and a counterpart to turbulent city life.

The Elbe Sandstone Mountains Malerweg trail, marked with a significant "M", is 112 km long and follows the tracks of romantic artists. It allows you to discover divers hiking tracks along bizarre rock formations of Saxon Switzerland.

Taking part in this short hiking tour, you explore the first part of the Malerweg trail between Pirna and Bad Schandau, which is located on the right side of the Elbe. After the last hike you leave Bad Schandau and return back to your starting point Pirna where you spend one more night. From here, you can perfectly plan your journey back home. You may continue your tour and hike the second part of the Malerweg trail with us at a later time – we look forward to seeing you!

This walking trip is not recommendable for travellers with mobility impairments.

Thereby, you experience the regional feature of the natural landscape Saxon Switzerland has to offer: Due to microclimatic conditions, you face an abundant and opulent flora in the deep canyons of this spectacular mountain range. Today’s final destination is the city of Wehlen (or alternatively the spa resort Rathen), both peaceful little towns right by the Elbe River.

Day 3: Wehlen/Rathen – Hohnstein (approx. 13/8 km, walking time: approx. 3,5 5 hrs)
Not far from Wehlen, you have a picturesque view over the Elbe Sandstone Mountains from probably the most famous observation deck – the Bastei Bridge. Best thing to do is to start your hike on Malerweg trail early in the morning in order to enjoy this stunning view fairly undisturbed. You descend down into Amselground and head for the second highlight of your hiking tour – the Hockstein Rock. From there, you have the perfect view onto today’s accommodation town – the city of Hohenstein. The Malerweg trail leads you along Wolf Canyon, Polenztal valley and Schindergraben right to your final destination for that day.

Day 1: Individual arrival in Pirna
After your arrival in Pirna, also known as the ‘gateway to Saxon Switzerland’, we recommend a walk through the medieval alleys. The city is also located close to Dresden and can be reached conveniently by public transport from there.

Day 2: Pirna-Liebethal – Rathen (approx. 17 km, walking time: approx. 5 hrs)
In the morning, you will take the bus to the starting point of the Malerweg trail. During your first hiking stage you will walk through three wild and romantic ravines with lush and diverse flora. Continuing via the town Wehlen, calmly situated on the Elbe River, you will reach the probably most famous viewpoint of Saxon Switzerland – the Bastei Bridge. Then you will descend into the Amselgrund to Rathen, today’s destination.

Day 3: Rathen – Hohnstein – Altendorf/Kirnitzschtal (approx. 22 km, walking time: approx. 6 – 7 hrs)
The first highlight of today’s hiking tour is the Hockstein rock from where you have a wonderful view to Hohnstein with its castle. Climbing down through the Wolfsschlucht gorge you will reach the lovely Polenztal. After a short ascent you will continue along the Malerweg Trail and reach the second highlight of the tour – the Brand viewpoint, also called the ‘Balcony of Saxon Switzerland’. Take a moment and enjoy the phenomenal panoramic view. After walking down roughly 800 steps into the ‘Tiefen Grund’ gorge and passing Waitzdorf you will soon arrive in Altendorf or continue along the Panorama trail to the Kirnitzschtal valley.

Day 4: Altendorf/Kirnitzschtal – Schrammsteine – Neumannmühle (approx. 17 km, walking time: approx. 6.5 hrs)
One of the highlights today is the Schrammstein massif, an elongated and heavily ragged rock formation offering stunning views.

Day 5: Neumannmühle – Schmilka – Krippen (approx. 22 km, walking time: approx. 7 – 8 hrs)
You start the day taking the bus back to Neumannmühle to continue the hiking tour along the Malerweg Trail. Explore the region called ‘Hintere Sächsische Schweiz’ with Zeughaus and Goldstein view point before climbing up to Großer Winterberg, with 556 metre the second highest mountain in Saxon Switzerland. On the descent to Schmilka we recommend a short detour to the Kipphorn view point. After crossing the Elbe River by ferry in Schmilka (additional costs) you walk up steps to Schöna. Now enjoy the view of the Schrammstein massif from the other side of the Elbe River while walking to Krippen, today’s destination.

Day 6: Krippen – Gohrisch – Königstein (approx. 21 km, walking time: 7 hrs)
Today’s stage is characterised by the climb of three rock massifs and the walk through vast plains. You will start with the Papststein, followed by the Gohrisch and then the Pfaffenstein. The three tops offer different breathtaking views of the landscape of the Elbe Sandstone Mountains. Your hiking stage ends in Königstein and if you still have time, we recommend you to visit the impressive fortress, enthroning above the town.

Day 7: Königstein – Pirna (approx. 20 km, walking time: approx. 7.5 hrs.)
Passing Thürmsdorf and Weissig, the last hiking stage on the Malerweg trail leads you to the Rauenstein massif. From the top you can catch sight of the Bastei Bridge on the other side of the Elbe River. The descent along the ridge will lead you to Pötzscha, via Naundorf and Obervogelgesang you will return to the starting point of your hiking tour – Pirna.

Day 8: Individual return journey
After six sportive walking stages with unforgettable moments along the Malerweg Trail, you will start your journey back home. You are very welcome to prolong your journey and treat yourself to an additional relaxing day in Pirna or the nearby Dresden – ‘Florence on the Elbe’. Our circular walking tour offers with the same point of departure and final destination

In case you prefer a hiking tour where you can arrive with your own car and have it parked at your starting and ending point, you may be interested in our circular tours: You enjoy all qualities of a classical hiking tour (walking along the most attractive hiking trails and getting to know various stage towns) – however – you benefit from one major advantage: You return to your starting point without having to book an extra return transfer. As you spend the first and the last night in one and the same hotel, you are most likely to be able to park your car right at the hotel.

Our circular walking holidays are also suitable for guests who wish to arrive by train or airplane. At least, a round trip ticket is mostly cheaper and easier to book and knowing the way from the train station/airport to the hotel sure is an advantage on the day of departure.
