In the far southeast of Germany the rather small but very famous Elbe Sandstone Mountains are located. Just a stone’s throw from Saxony’s capitol Dresden, you can immerge into a magic world of bizzare rock formations, deep valleys, historical fortresses and the river landscape of the Elbe.

The Elbe Sandstone Malerweg trail, a 112 km long circular walking route, leads you from Pirna along the Bastei Bridge, the Brandstein view point, the Schrammsteine massif, the Fortress Königstein and charming villages back to its origin Pirna.

The region is also called "Saxon Switzerland" and the name dates back to the 18th century when the Swiss painters Anton Graff and Adrian Zingg felt reminded of their landscape back home. Later, Romantics such as Caspar David Friedrich and Ludwig Richter were inspired by the fascinating views in the Elbe Sandstone Mountains and created unique works of art.

So you will hike along the tracks of famous painters as the name Malerweg Trail suggests (literal translation: Painter’s Path or Trail). Set out to experience the fairytale-like landscape of the Elbe Sandstone Mountains yourself!

This walking trip is not recommendable for travellers with mobility impairments.

Please note: If you arrive on Monday, you will stay overnight in Gohrisch on the 7th and 8th day, otherwise in Königstein.

Day 1: Individual arrival at Dresden
The "Florence on the Elbe" shines with the world-famous sights of the Frauenkirche (Church of Our Lady), the Zwinger, the Semper Opera House and the Brühl Terrace and forms a picturesque silhouette. Let yourself be enchanted by the historical flair during a stroll through the baroque Old Town.

Day 2: Pirna-Liebethal – Rathen (approx. 17 km, walking time: approx. 5,5 hrs)
In the morning, you will take the S-bahn and bus tto Pirna-Liebethal, the starting point of your first hiking tour along the Malerweg (duration: approx. 1 h). During your first hiking stage you will walk through three wild and romantic ravines. Experience one of the special features of the natural landscape in the Elbe Sandstone Mountains: favoured by the microclimate, you will encounter a lush and varied flora in the deep gorges along the Malerweg Trail. Nun ist es nicht weit bis zum wohl berühmtesten Aussichtspunkt der Sächsischen Schweiz – der Basteibrücke.

Day 3: Rathen – Hohnstein (approx. 8 km, walking time: approx. 3,5  hrs)
Today you descend into the Amselgrund and head for the second highlight of your hiking tour - the Hockstein. Through the Wolfsschlucht you reach the Polenztal valley, below the village of Hohnstein with its castle, which you will have enough time to visit.

Day 4: Hohenstein – Altendorf/Kirnitzschtal (approx. 15 km, walking time: approx. 6 hrs)
Today you will hike to the Brand viewpoint which is also called the ‘Balcony of Saxon Switzerland’. You will continue the tour by taking roughly 800 steps down into the ‘Tiefen Grund’ gorge. Passing Waitzdorf you will reach Altendorf or continue along the Panorama trail to the Kirnitzschtal valley.

Day 5: Altendorf/Kirnitzschtal – Schrammsteine – Neumannmühle (approx. 17 km, walking time: 6.5 hrs)
Hike directly uphill to the Schrammstein viewpoint and along the ridge path through the Schrammstein massif. Passing the Großer and Kleiner Dom, you reach the Affensteinweg, which leads you to the Lichtenhainer Wasserfall. Via the Kuhstall with its sky ladder, you reach the stage destination - the technical monument Neumannmühle. By bus you return to the Kirnitzschtal valley or to Bad Schandau.

Day 6: Neumannmühle – Großer Winterberg – region Schmilka/ Krippen (approx. 14 22 km, walking time: approx. 6  8 hrs)
You start the day taking the bus back to Neumannmühle to continue the walking tour along the Malerweg Trail. Explore the region called "Hintere Sächsische Schweiz" with Zeughaus and Goldstein view point before climbing up to Großer Winterberg, with 556 metres the second highest mountain in Saxon Switzerland.  In Schmilka you take the Elbe ferry (costs not included) and travel by S-Bahn to your accommodation in Bad Schandau/Krippen or continue hiking the Malerweg via Schöna and Reinhardtsdorf to Krippen (further approx. 9 km).

Day 7: Region Schmilka/ Reinhardtsdorf – Gohrisch (approx. 15 18 km, walking time: 6 7 hrs)
Take the S-Bahn to the end of yesterday's hike to Schmilka or continue directly from Krippen on the Malerweg. Climbing the table mountains Papststein and Gohrisch are on your tour plan today. You will spend the night in Gohrisch or Königstein.

Day 8: Round hike Gohrisch/Königstein: Pfaffenstein, Quirl,  Königstein Fortress (approx. 15 km, walking time: approx. 6 hrs)
Today's short hike along the Malerweg leads you over the Pfaffenstein, past the Diebeskeller cave to Königstein Fortress. This leaves enough time for a visit to the "Inconceivable".

Day 9: Gohrisch/Königstein – Wehlen/Pirna (approx. 20/13 km, walking time: approx. 7.5/5 hrs)
Passing Thürmsdorf and Weissig, the last hiking stage on the Malerweg trail leads you to the Rauenstein massif. From the top you can catch sight of the Bastei Bridge on the other side of the Elbe River. Over the ridge you walk on towards Pirna, where you board the S-Bahn to Dresden. If the route is too long for you, take the S-Bahn after 13 km from Wehlen or after 18 km from Obervogelgesang.

For centuries, the Elbe Sandstone Mountains have fascinated nature lovers, romantics and hikers. Walk through the wildly rugged rocky world of Saxon Switzerland and enjoy breathtaking views from bizarre rock formations and plateaus, alternating with romantic valleys alongside the Elbe River.

During your hiking holidays you will see famous sights such as the Bastei near Rathen, the Königstein Fortress and the Rock Arch Pravčická Brána in Bohemian Switzerland (the largest natural stone bridge in Europe). But the tour will also take you to attractions lesser-known such as Schrammsteine and Paffenstein with the ‘Barbarine’ rock needle

This walking trip is not recommendable for travellers with mobility impairments.

[ettappen] =>

Please note that the routes indicated in the itinerary are the hiking stages only. The places of accommodation may differ from the starting and finishing points of the hikes.

Day 1: Individual arrival at Bad Schandau
After your arrival in Bad Schandau, either by car or train, you can take a short tour of the town. The massive, Protestant St. John's Church with its octagonal west tower has existed in its present form since 1679 and stands directly on the market square. Together with the numerous hotels bordering the Elbe and the two Elbe bridges, St. John's Church forms the town silhouette of Bad Schandau.

Day 2: Bad Schandau – Brand Fortress Hohnstein Rathen (approx. 18 km, walking time: approx. 6 hrs)
The first walking tour starts with an ascent to a fine panoramic view. Later on you will take around 800 stairs to reach the Brand – the "Balcony of the Saxon Switzerland National Park". Enjoy the breathtaking view over the Elbe River Valley and the Sandstone Mountains before you continue your hike to the impressive Hohnstein Castle. The last part of today’s hiking tour takes you through idyllic ravines and forests, past wonderful Amsel Lake to the spa town Rathen.

Day 3: Rathen Wehlen Königstein (approx. 14 km, walking time: approx. 56 hrs)
You will start the tour with an ascent to the famous Bastei Rocks with its bridge. At the peak – approximately 300 metres above sea level – you will have wonderful views over the Elbe River Valley. Continue your tour through the Höllengrund and Wehlener Grund to the picturesque town Wehlen. Here you will cross the Elbe river by ferry and soon reach the rock formation Rauenstein. On the top of the rock offering stunning views including the Bastei Rocks. Today’s destination will be Königstein with its famous fortress which is the largest in Europe.

Day 4: Königstein – Pfaffenstein – Gohrisch (approx. 11 km, walking time: approx. 4.5 hrs)
From Königstein, you will walk on pleasant forest paths to the Paffenstein with the famous rock pinnacle Barbarine. This over 42 meter high rock is the best known freestanding rock in the German part of the Elbe Sandstone Mountains and is one of the landmarks of Saxon Switzerland National Park. Afterwards, the hiking tour takes you further up the Pfaffenstein trail to the summit of the Pfaffenstein with its impressive view of the Lilienstein. Continue along the Muselweg trail to the spa town of Gohrisch

Day 5: Gohrisch Papststein Krippen (approx. 10 km, walking time: approx. 4.5 hrs)
On your fourth day of walking you will continue to explore the so called ‘Empire of Stones’ by climbing the Gohrisch (448 metres) and then the Papststein (451 metres). From both rock formations you will have wonderful views over the Saxon Switzerland National Park. Passing the adventurous Kleinhennersdorfer Höhlen (caves) and through the Liethen Valley, you will arrive in Krippen – today’s destination.

Day 6: Hrensko – Rock Arch – Hrensko (approx. 15 km, walking time: approx 5 hrs)
For your today’s walking tour you will need your passports or ID card because it will take place in the Bohemian Switzerland in the Czech Republic. By train (S-Bahn) you will get from Krippen to Hřensko from where the hiking path will lead you to Europe's largest natural rock arch – the Pravčická brána. We recommend you to take time to explore the impressive attractions. Afterwards, your walking tour will lead you into the wild valley of the river Kamenice. Soon you will reach the boat station of the Edmundsklamm gorge and continue your way by water (extra costs, not included in the price). Enjoy the gentle boat ride along the narrow course of the river past imaginative rock formations. Back in Hřensko, walk to the Elbe and then take the S-Bahn back to Krippen.

Day 7: Krippen Schrammsteine – Lichtenhain waterfall – Bad Schandau (approx. 14 km, walking time: approx. 6 hrs)
By ferry across the Elbe (extra costs) you will reach the starting point of the last hiking tour. After a gentle walk on forest paths you will have an arduous ascent via steel ladders and staircases to the Schrammstein rocks and ridge. But it is worth the effort because a breathtaking view over the entire Elbe Sandstone Mountains will unfold itself from the top. You then follow the forest path along the Affensteig and reach the Lichtenhainer waterfall. From here you take the bus or the famous Kirnitzschtalbahn (historical tram – ticket not included) back to Bad Schandau.

Day 8: Individual departure
With lots of wonderful memories you will start your journey back home. You are welcome to prolong your holidays with additional nights in the region or Dresden. We will gladly arrange the accommodations for you.

Look forward to a circular hiking tour through the Upper Black Forest – Germany’s warmest region between the North Sea and the Alps. Between the Titisee and Bernau, the region presents its most beautiful sights as e.g. cool glacial lakes, deep valleys and summits with spectacular views.

The hiking region of the Black Forest surely is an impressive area: stunning summits alternate with deep valleys and deep blue mountain lakes and thus turn this region into one of Germany’s most attractive hiking destinations. This hiking tour starts at the Titisee and leads you up to the Feldberg Mountain, which has the highest peak of the entire Black Forest.

You continue your walking holidays through the winter sport village of Todtnauberg until you reach the beautiful high valley Bernau. Before returning to Lake Titisee at the end of this hiking week, you pass through quiet mountain valleys until you arrive at the shores of Lake Schluchsee.

This hiking tour is not recommendable for travellers with mobility impairments.

Day 1: Individual arrival to Saig
After your arrival, get into the mood of your upcoming Upper Black Forest hiking tour while taking a walk through the climatic health resort of Saig.

Day 2: Saig – Hinterzarten (approx. 16 km, walking time: approx. 4 – 5 hrs)
The first stage of your walking holidays in the Upper Black Forest leads you away from the plateau of Saig right through the calm forest of the nature reserve Rotmeer. After having passed the valley of Bärental, you reach a hiking trail, which leads you steeply uphill. Hiking on one of the most popular hiking trails in the Black Forest called Westweg, you continue through swampy countryside until you arrive at the village Hinterzarten.

Day 3: Hinterzarten – Feldberg (approx. 16 km, walking time: approx. 4 – 5 hrs)
Leaving Hinterzarten behind, you hike to the ice-age glacial lake Feldsee. After you had a pleasant break at this picturesque site you follow a narrow trail up to Seehalde near Präg, which is one of the biggest block dumps in the Southern Black Forest. A quiet mountain inn on top of the Feldberg awaits you for today’s night.

Day 4: Feldberg – Todtnauberg (approx. 17 km, walking time: approx. 4 – 5 hrs)
On today’s hiking tour you pass by fragrant flowers and herb meadows up to the summit of the Feldberg. Enjoy this phenomenal view from the Feldberg’s peak after having had a steep but short ascent. The Feldberg is the highest summit you can find in the Black Forest. Keep following the Westweg trail and descent smoothly into the vivacious village of Todtnauberg.

Day 5: Todtnauberg – Bernau im Schwarzwald (approx. 18 km, walking time: approx. 5 – 6 hrs)
The hiking tour continues downhill the southern slope of the Feldberg until you reach Todtnau. Enjoy stunning views over the surrounding area while you ride up the mountain Hasenhorn on a chairlift. From up here you walk alongside the Prägbach creek passing waterfalls until you arrive at the high valley Bernau. This high valley counts to one of the most beautiful ones in the Black Forest due to its spacious forest and meadow landscape.

Day 6: Bernau im Schwarzwald – Schluchsee (approx. 23 km, walking time: approx. 5 hrs)
The highlight of your hiking holidays is simultaneously the longest stage through the southern area of the Black Forest. Passing a former silver mine, you continue todays hike along the Schluchtensteig trail – another very popular hiking trail in the Black Forest. This trail leads you up until you reach the mountain hut Krummenkreuz. Here, it is worth taking a break. Before you are able to enjoy the spectacular view over Lake Schluchsee, let the beautiful forest landscape once more work its magic. The largest lake in the Black Forest and the health resort Schluchsee are today’s travel destination.

Day 7: Schluchsee – Saig (approx. 23 km, walking time: approx. 4 – 5 hrs)
Look forward to your last and calm stage of your walking holidays. Along the shores of the Schluchsee you hike to a small village called Falkenau. One more steep ascent until you have finally reached Titisee – the starting point of your circular hiking tour through the Black Forest.

Day 8: Individual departure
You start your individual journey back home having lots of great and unforgettable memories. Let the most beautiful hiking moments between Schluchsee and Feldberg pass in review. You are more than welcome to extend your hiking holidays through the Upper Black Forest with an additional night in Titisee and thus end your Black Forest vacation even more pleasantly.

The German Bavarian part of the Alps is quite beautiful, something to be seen once in life. So why not take a journey around the highest mountain in this part of the Alps. You will discover green meadows, snow-covered peaks and stunning waterfalls.

Mount Zugspitze, 2962m high, is easily reached by taking a cable car. But a truly wonderful week you will spend walking around the bottom, sleeping in little towns and picnicking for lunch.

This hiking trip is not recommendable for travellers with mobility impairments.

Day 1: Individual arrival to Garmisch-Partenkirchen
This cute town is famous for the winter sport, which plays an absolute huge here. And even if it is summer, take some time to stroll through the alleys and small roads. Get accustomed to the Bavarian style of living and maybe get your first “Brotzeit” here.

Day 2: Garmisch-Patenkirchen – Mittenwald/Klais (approx. 16 km, walking time: approx. 5 hrs)
Finally your journey around the mountain Zugspitze started. One of the highlights of the tour is the Partnachklamm (Partnach gorge), the entrance fee is not included, but it will be totally worth your time and money. Where else can you walk between sheer rock walls with a river under you? Later you will walk along peaceful meadows towards Klais or Mittenwald. If you want to, you can rush one part of your journey by taking the tram, but the fee is equally not included.

Day 3: Mittenwald/Klais – Leutasch (approx. 14 km, walking time: approx. 4 hrs)
The next part of your journey goes along the Leutscher Ache. It was cut out of the rock and the way on wooden planks is a bit adventurous, but also it is really safe on them. On your way to Leutasch Valley the great big massif of Wetterstein throws its shadow over lovely meadows and your way. Finally in Leutasch you can relax your feet or spend some additional time on your feet taking a stroll through the town to get to know the Tyrolean style of living

Day 4: Day off or lake tour (approx. 9 km, walking time: approx. 3 hrs)
You can spend the day relaxing and just not walking or you could do the opposite and go for a small side journey around Seefeld (a lake). You could also go on an excursion to one of the Seefelder summits. Here you have the choice of plain walking or lazily going by cable car.

Day 5: Leutasch – Ehrwald (approx. 17 km, walking time: approx. 5 hrs)
You have to take the bus to the nature paradise Gaistal, where todays journey will start. On meadows along the road you will be able to see some livestock in form of cute Haflinger horses, cattle and Scottish Galloways. Keep walking on the Ganhofer path towards the Ehrwalder Alm. The Bavarian author Ludwig Ganghof has spent quite some time in this valley and a lot of his novels are inspired by it. Later you can take the cable car down into the valley and walk further on to the Ehrwalder Alm, where you will spend your night.

Day 6: Ehrwald – Garmisch-Partenkirchen (approx. 12 km, walking time: approx. 4,5 hrs)
Now with the mountain Zugspitze in direct view, walk towards it. You will get to the Eibsee view, which is a famous panoramic view. After making this memory unforgettable, take the train back to Garmisch-Partenkirchen, where your journey stared and will end.

Day 7: Individual departure
We hope you enjoyed your journey around the bottom of the mountain Zugspitze. Maybe we can attract you with a few additional nights in Garmisch-Partenkirchen and a travel up the mountain. Or another journey somewhere? We will help you planning and booking so you can enjoy your vacation.

Our circular walking tour offers with the same point of departure and final destination

In case you prefer a hiking tour where you can arrive with your own car and have it parked at your starting and ending point, you may be interested in our circular tours: You enjoy all qualities of a classical hiking tour (walking along the most attractive hiking trails and getting to know various stage towns) – however – you benefit from one major advantage: You return to your starting point without having to book an extra return transfer. As you spend the first and the last night in one and the same hotel, you are most likely to be able to park your car right at the hotel.

Our circular walking holidays are also suitable for guests who wish to arrive by train or airplane. At least, a round trip ticket is mostly cheaper and easier to book and knowing the way from the train station/airport to the hotel sure is an advantage on the day of departure.

Further information on our circular tours by Shank's pony

In our section "Circular walking holidays", we have compiled various hiking tours that have the same point of departure and final destination. If you have not yet found your dream tour in our repertoire, we would like to create a tailor-made offer for a self-guided circular walking tour for you. Please use our request form for individual walking tour programmes. We are delighted about your interest on our walking tour service and are looking forward to your request!
