This bicycle tour from Prague to Dresden connects two significant cultural and historical cities. Capture the flair of the golden city Prague before you set out on your way through the rural landscapes of the Czech Republic to Germany.

Over the last few years, the Czech side of the Elbe Cycle Path has continuously been extended and developed. Therefore, you will cycle mostly on the paved cycle path, rarely using country roads with light or moderate traffic. Look forward to the pretty Elbe-towns such as Mělník or Litoměřice before you reach the bizarre and rocky landscape of the Elbe Sandstone Mountains and, finally, Dresden - the 'Florence of the Elbe'.

Please note: This cycle tour from Prague to Dresden can also be booked in the opposite direction.

This cycle trip is not recommendable for travellers with mobility impairments.

In the last couple of years, on the Czech side the Elbe cycle path has continuously been extended and developed. This allows bikers to mostly cycle on the asphalted path, rarely have to make way through any roadways.

You cycle tour continues to Torgau, a Renaissance town featuring Schloss Hartenfels and the palatial church which is known as the first Protestant church of Germany and which was dedicated by Martin Luther.

Day 4: Torgau – Lutherstadt Wittenberg (approx. 68 km)
First you will have a ride passing through the floodplains of the river Elbe until Pretzsch. Today you will be staying in Wittenberg, a town which became famous through Martin Luther. As the historic, spiritual and cultural centre of Europe, Wittenberg was influenced by such important historical figures as Martin Luther, Philipp Melanchthon, Lucas Cranach the Elder and Lucas Cranach the Younger. In 1996 the Luther memorials were placed on the UNESCO World Heritage List.

This bike tour can be shared by an extra night in Pretzsch (approx. 37 km/35 km). Price see extra nights (Category B).

Day 5: Lutherstadt Wittenberg – Dessau (approx. 37 km)
This leg will take you through the beautiful meadows of the Elbe and past the world-famous Woerlitzer Park and Gardens. The 100-hectare large park offers numerous attractions including islands, canals, temples and statues. With Dessau you will enter a town which played an important role for a new architecture style including a whole life philosophy occured in the 1920s, the so called "Bauhaus".

Day 6: Dessau – Magdeburg (approx. 78 - 88 km)
Between Barby and Magdeburg you will cycle across another biosphere reserve along the river Elbe giving home to lots of vulnerable species of birds. Magdeburg offers lots of rambling parkways where you can relax. Experience also the famous Cathedral and the Monastery.

Day 7: Magdeburg – Tangermünde (approx. 80 km)
Today you will pass the impressive and technical challenging construction of the waterway junction - a gigantic building project to conect the waterways of Hannover, Magdeburg and Berlin. Milestone of this cycling day will be the famous monastery of Jerichow. The Elbe river cycle path takes you further to Tangermünde. By walking through the town you will discover the traces of 1000 years of history. The most impressive building is the 24 meter high town hall with its opulent decorated front created in the 15th century.

Today Elbe river cycle path takes you to Havelberg. Havelberg is another round village with half-timbered houses. Do not miss the Romanesque cathedral.

Day 9: Havelberg – Wittenberge (approx. 38 km)
We recommend to make a break in the town Ruehstaedt. It is known for its big stork population. Every year in spring time about 70 storks turn back from their winter time overseas to live on roofs, pylons or towers. Wittenberge with its numerous towers can already be seen from a distance.

Recreative hours in untouched nature will define your cycling day. Only from time to time you will pass through dreamy villages.

Day 11: Hitzacker – Lauenburg (approx. 55 km)

Day 12: Lauenburg – Hamburg (approx. 55 km)
Most of the time you will cycle along the Elbe riverbanks. Before entering the metropole you will pass a calm area with small villages. You can see Hamburg already from far away. Along the Elbe and on the flat and well-asphalted Elbe Cycle Path, the tour takes you initially from Dresden to the world famous town of Porcelain Meissen, the residence city Torgau up until Lutherstadt Wittenberg. There, you can follow the tracks of Reformation. In order to reach Berlin, you then leave the Elbe Cycle Path and take the Europe Biking Path R1 (also called Euro-Route R1) northwards.

It leads you through countryside and forests and you eventually pass the natural reserve Hoher Fläming. With a bit of luck, you can catch sight of the last remaining Great Bustards in Germany. Very soon, you reach the lowlands of Bad Belzig and it begins to become flatter again. You continue passing the city of Beelitz, which is known for its asparagus all over Germany. Maybe you have the chance to try some of the delicious and freshly-stung vegetable?!

This cycle trip is not recommendable for travellers with mobility impairments.

[ettappen] =>

Day 1: Individual arrival in Dresden
Seize the first day of your travel from Dresden to Berlin and discover the capitol of Saxony during an individual city stroll. The choice of sights is huge: Zwinger Palace, Semper Opera House or the famous Dresden Church of Our Lady await your visit!

Day 2: Dresden Strehla (approx. 66 km)
The first stage of your bicycle tour to Berlin leads you passed the vineyards of Dresden Elbe Valley. En route, the contemplative Radebeul village centre Altkötzschenbroda is perfect for a break. Soon, the porcelain town Meissen welcomes you with its landmark – the ensemble of cathedral and castle Albrechtsburg. You pass the sport and noodle town Riesa before you will reach your final destination for the day – Strehla.

Day 3: Strehla – Torgau (approx. 40 km)
Today is more of a rural day and you cycle through many little villages. In between, a stop in Belgern is worth it. Belgern is the only Saxon town with a Roland statue. “Roland” is a still image of a knight only equipped with a sword and ensembles the city rights and thus was often used to be set up on market squares or in front of town halls. Now only 20km are left until the residence city Torgau. You should seize the afternoon for a visit of castle Hartenfels and the castle church.

Day 4: Torgau – Lutherstadt Wittenberg (approx. 68 km)
A day filling stage is on the programme today. In Pretzsch, you can change over the river to the other side of the banks via ferry (price not included in cost of travel). On the right side of the river, you continue your bicycle tour via Elster to Lutherstadt Wittenberg, which was the starting point of Martin Luther’s Reformation movement.

This tour can be divided when staying overnight in Pretzsch (results in 37 km/35 km).

Day 5: Lutherstadt Wittenberg – Bad Belzig (approx. 42 km)
Today, you leave the Elbe and continue your bicycle tour to Berlin at the European Bike Path R1 inland through the natural reserve Hoher Fläming and the health resort Bad Belzig. Even from far distance, you can already see the castle complex of Eisenhardt castle. After a city stroll through historic old town, you can relax in the spa "Steintherme Bad Belzig".

Day 6: Bad Belzig – Potsdam (approx. 60 km)
The European Bike Path R1, which has accompanied you on your bicycle tour since Lutherstadt Wittenberg, presents at its best showing you the most wonderful scenery today. Potsdam with Sanssouci Castle and many more pretty castles and parks is today’s final destination. Prior, you ride through the growing region of the famous Beelitzer asparagus and along the banks of lake Schwielow and Templiner See.

Day 7: Potsdam – Berlin-Mitte (approx. 35 km)
You leave Potsdam by crossing the Havel using the Glienicker bridge and keep on riding in the direction of Germany’s capitol Berlin. Through the Berlin forest and along the Greater Wannsee you approach the TV Tower Berlin. Today’s final destination is simultaneously the final destination of your bicycle tour from Dresden to Berlin – The city centre of Germany’s capitol with its numerous sights.

Day 8: Individual journey back home or transfer service to Dresden
Berlin sure lures you with its overwhelming abundance of attractions into undertaking a city stroll. If one overnight stay in Berlin is too short, we gladly offer to book extra nights in Berlin (or any other place according to your travel description). Please do not hesitate to contact us!

Day 1: Individual arrival in Magdeburg
Welcome to Magdeburg – the capital of Saxony-Anhalt! This old city has many tales to tell. The local historical monuments and building will satisfy your curiosity. For example the Magdeburg Dome, symbol of the city, or the12th or 13th century fortresses surrounding the old town will transfer you to another time!

Day 2: Magdeburg – Dessau (approx. 78 - 88 km)
As you are cycling along the river Elbe, notice the purity of the surrounding nature! This UNESCO protected area - the Biosphere Reserve of the Middle Elbe – contains the largest interconnected water meadow area of Middle Europe and includes the Elbe floodplains as a unique biotope which serves as a shelter for many endangered species. The reserve also contains Woerlitzer Park. This is the oldest landscape park and one of the first and largest English parks in continental Europe. Your last stop will be the city of Dessau. Explore the local ‘Bauhaus’ architecture and visit the Bauhaus Collage or Museum.

Day 3: Dessau – Lutherstadt Wittenberg (approx. 37 km)
On your second bike tour along the Elbe River you will pass the Biosphere Reserve for a few more kilometers before you reach the beautiful City Lutherstadt Wittenberg. There are many exciting places you can go to. A fun and relaxing way to spend the rest of the day is a visit to either the Alaris butterfly park, the NABU Center "Im Stadtwald" or the local zoo. If you are in for a more cultural experience, you can visit Wittenberg’s 14th century Reformation Church, the House of Lucas Cranach or Martin Luther, or the one-hundred-waters Luther-Melanchthon-Gymnasium. A perfect ending to the day offers Luthersbrunnen – local restaurant offering regional specialties.

Day 4: Lutherstadt Wittenberg – Torgau (approx. 68 km)
On the fourth day of your bicycle holidays you will be passing through the floodplains of the River Elbe until you reach the city of Pretzsch. The 16th century renaissance castle of Pretzsch offers itself as an ideal location for a snack. After you have left Pretzsch, you will bike approx. 20 more kilometers until you reach the border to Saxony and from there you will bike along the Elbe all the way to Torgau.

This bike tour can be shared by an extra night in Pretzsch (approx. 35 km/37 km). Price see extra nights (Cat. B).

Day 5: Torgau – Strehla (approx. 40 km)
Passing by the villages hemming the River Elbe, one worth paying a visit is Belgern. The main attraction here is the city hall, painted in vermilion, guarded by the statue "Roland of Belgern". Once you have left the village, you will continue along the River Elbe until you reach Strehla. Besides the Castle and the old town hall of Strehla, you can visit the adorable zoo of small animals, nourishing raccoons, mini pigs, chipmunks and many more.

Day 6: Strehla – Dresden (approx. 66 km)
If you have decided to spend your night in Strehla, we recommend you pay a visit to Riesa, renowned for its steel industry and sports. Biking further along the Elbe, you will pass by lovely wine villages until you reach Meissen, a highlight of the today’s bike tour. The city of porcelain welcomes you in its whole noble beauty. With the castle Albrechtsturm, the porcelain manufactory, the late gothic city hall and many more, the city Meissen is annually visited by hundreds of thousands of people. Follow the River Elbe from Meissen and you will soon reach the town of Radebeul. This wine, mansion and garden city, with its eight historical village centers and two residential neighborhoods, is located directly on Saxony’s wine. Your final destination for today is Dresden, known as the Florence of the Elbe.

Day 7: Dresden – Bad Schandau (approx. 45 km)
Before continuing your tour you should visit the famous historical centre of Dresden. Whether the famous Zwinger, the Semper Opera or the Court Church – a tour of the former royal residence by bicycle will take you past many sites. Your today’s bicycle tour along the Elbe River Cycle Path leads you to the gardens of Pillnitz Palace, the former summer residence of the royal Wettin family of Saxony. The park with its numerous trees, some of which are more than 200 years old, is regarded as a significant collection of rare and precious plants. From here the journey takes you along the Elbe past the Koenigstein fortress to Bad Schandau in the heart of Saxon Switzerland.

Day 8: Bad Schandau – Litoměřice (approx. 70 km)
On this day trip along the Elbe cycle path you leave Germany and continue in the Czech Republic. You will still see some bizarre rocky formations of the Saxon Switzerland before coming to Decin. We recommend you visit the local baroque castle, where also Frédéric Chopin went to search for inspiration. From Děčín outwards, you will cycle through Ústí nad Labem and pass by the ruin of castle Střekov which is situated atop the River. From here it is only a few kilometres to Litoměřice with its famous chalice house. Take a walk through the old town of Litoměřice to give your day the ideal ending of the day.

Day 9: Litoměřice – Melnik (approx. 45 km)
Today’s cycle tour you should start with a visit of the former fortress and town Terezín only a few kilometres from Litoměřice. The Elbe cycle path leads you through the town of Roudnice before your tour continues to the centre of the bohemian wine growing area Mělník. From the castle in Mělník you can enjoy a marvellous view over the confluence of the two rivers Vltava and Elbe (Labe in Czech).

Day 10: Melnik – Prague (approx. 55 km)
The rest of the tour today the Vltava River will lead you all the way to the Capital of the Czech Republic. The "Golden city" has plenty to offer: Situated on both sides of the River Vltava, the highlights of Prague include the sixteen arches of the 14th century Charles Bridge, the Old Town Square and the irregular cobbled square with its famous Astronomical Clock.

Day 11: Stay in Prague
Use the day to discover Prague on your own. The historic centre is ideal for exploring by foot. You can visit Hradčany and their royal palace. And then just sit back and enjoy the friendly atmosphere in the shops, cafes and wine bars, which make Prague a delightful place to visit.

On this bicycle holidays you will have the opportunity to cycle through most beautiful parts of Germany. The bike tour along the Elbe river from Magdeburg to Hamburg will lead you through three different Nature Reserves, many historical cities and countless charming little villages.

The bike tours are fairly flat and follow the run of the river Elbe. The majority of the trails are in good condition and offer a wide range of cultural and leisure activities, making it ideal for travellers in every age group, for families and groups. The Elbe is one of the "slow" rivers. There is hardly any altitude, so it does not really matter whether you cycle upstream or downstream. However, the prevailing winds from the west and the countryside around the Elbe make the journey upstream preferable.

Please note: This cycle tour from Magdeburg to Hamburg can also be booked in the opposite direction.

This trip is not recommendable for travellers with mobility impairments.

Day 1: Individual arrival at Magdeburg
Experience the Cathedral, the Monastery and stroll in the footsteps of the inventor Otto von Guericke. Magdeburg also offers lots of rambling parkways like the "Elbauenpark" and the "Rothehornpark" where you can relax.

Day 2: Magdeburg – Tangermünde (approx. 80 km)
Today you will pass the impressive and technical challenging construction of the waterway junction – a gigantic building project to conect the waterways of Hannover, Magdeburg and Berlin.

Note: If today’s cycle tour is too long for you, we can split it into two cycle tours. Please ask for your individual itinerary.

Day 3: Tangermünde – Havelberg (approx. 50 km)
Today Elbe river cycle path takes you to Havelberg. Havelberg is another round village with half-timbered houses. Do not miss to visit the Romanesque cathedral.

Day 4: Havelberg – Wittenberge (approx. 38 km)
We recommend to make a break in the town Ruehstaedt. It is known for its big stork population. Every year in spring time about 70 storks turn back from their winter time overseas to live on roofs, pylons or towers. Wittenberge with its numerous towers can already be seen from a distance.

Day 5: Wittenberge – Hitzacker (approx. 78 km)
Recreative hours in untouched nature will define your cycling day. Only from time to time you will pass through dreamy villages.

Note: If today’s cycle tour is too long for you, we can split it into two cycle tours. Please ask for your individual itinerary.

Day 6: Hitzacker – Lauenburg (approx. 55 km)
You will pass through an unique landscape called "Wendland" which is characterized by a special form of settlement – the round villages. The landscape is flat and dominated by huge floodplains. They are a paradise for birds like storks, sea eagles or cranes. Lauenburg is an old skipper's town with a lot of beautiful restored half-timbered houses from the 16th and 17th century.

Day 7: Lauenburg – Hamburg (approx. 55 km)
Most of the time you will cycle along the Elbe riverbanks. Before entering the metropole you will pass a calm area with small villages. You can see Hamburg already from far away. Don' t miss the opportunity to take part in a roundtrip by boat. You will get an impression of Hamburg harbour seen from the water with its huge ocean liners and container terminals.

Day 8: Individual departure
You can of course always extend your bike tour with extra nights in Hamburg or other towns. We will be pleased to arrange additional accommodation for you.

Day 2: Hamburg – Lauenburg (approx. 55 km)

Day 4: Hitzacker – Wittenberge (approx. 78 km)
On your fourth day you will continue to cycle through the peaceful Elbe floodplains. Enjoy the tranquillity and wildlife along the way. You will also pass the former inner German borderland. Soon after that, Wittenberge will appear on the horizon, well known for its many towers.

Day 5: Wittenberge – Havelberg (approx. 38 km)
After leaving Wittenberge you will cycle on dykes along the banks of the Elbe to Havelberg. Visit the city’s impressive cathedral in the Romanesque and Gothic style made of red-brick.

The sixth leg of your biking holidays will take you through small villages to Tangermünde. The town’s medieval centre invites you to discover the many red-brick and half-timbered buildings.

Today’s stage is defined by nature: enjoy the ride through the vast floodplains with its diverse wildlife. Shortly before reaching Magdeburg, stop at the imposing "European water junction" connecting the Elbe, the Elbe-Havel-Canal and the Mid-land Canal. In Magdeburg do not miss to pay a visit to the cathedral and Hundertwasser building.

Day 1: Individual arrival to Hamburg
Hamburg, the second largest city in Germany, welcomes you! This city is exceptional through its artistry, authenticity, style and charm. It has over 60 theaters, over 100 music clubs, about 60 museums, some 280 music publishers and 200 recorded music companies. In addition to that more than 10,000 self-employed artists are living and working in Hamburg. In other words, this city will fascinate you in every way!

Day 2: Hamburg – Lauenburg (approx. 55 km)
Once you have left Hamburg, you will cycle along the Elbe riverbanks past numerous villages to Lauenburg. A nice opportunity for a stop presents itself on the way to Lauenburg in the town Geesthacht. After a relaxing break, you may visit the Geeshacht Museum, finding out just a little more about the local history and development. Once you have arrived and settled in Lauenburg, we recommend for you to go and see the "Rufer". This 185cm tall bronze statue was made in 1959 by a German sculptor Karl-Heinz-Goedtke and now stands on the forecourt of the Elbe Street.

Day 3: Lauenburg – Hitzacker (approx. 55 km)
As soon as you leave Lauenburg, you will be entering the Natural Park Elbhoehen-Wendland. This Park stretches over an area of 1160 square kilometres throughout the eastern part of Lower Saxony and characterizes itself by special round villages. The flat landscape is dominated by vast floodplains, creating a paradise for birds such as storks, sea eagles or cranes. Your today’s destination is the city Hitzacker, situated on the right riverbank of Elbe. End your day with a visit to the local archaeological centre or a walk to Katemine's Mill.

Day 4: Hitzacker – Wittenberge (approx. 78 km)
After leaving Hitzacker, you will continue your bicycle holidays through dreamy villages lined up along the banks of the River Elbe until you reach Wittenberge. The history of this city is well known throughout Germany, as you will find several statues and monuments commemorating the victims of the local fascistic regime around the city. A local culinary specialty is the Knieperkohl, consisting of white cabbage, marrow-derived carbon, and green cabbage with wine and cherry leaves.

Note: If today’s cycle tour is too long for you, we can split it into two cycle tours. Please ask for your individual itinerary.

Day 5: Wittenberge – Havelberg (approx. 38 km)
Today you will cycle on against the current of the Elbe. Your first stop is the city Ruehstaedt – a small and peaceful looking settlement right in the middle of the UNESCO Biosphere Reserve Elbe-River Landscapes. Apart from the old water tower and the late 15th century protestant village church, big prides of this town are the storks. Every year up to 40 stork pairs and many single storks come to Ruehstaedt, making this town the richest in storks in Germany. Returning back to the river, the next stop on the way is the town Havelberg. With its water-tourism center – a part of the Water-tourism project "Blue Ribbon" – you and your family will surely have a great time here.

Day 6: Havelberg – Tangermuende (approx. 50 km)
The sixth day of your bicycle holidays will present you another part of the River Elbe. Cycle through the untouched nature of the river's surroundings and soak in its purity and beauty. Along the way you will pass by the town Arneburg. Apart from being an ideal place to take a break and regain your strengths, the local town church of St. George from the 18th century is worth a look. From there, you are only 15 more kilometres away from your destination in Tangermuende. There you can see the unique architecture of the Eulenturm and the 15th century town hall.

Day 7: Tangermuende – Magdeburg (approx. 80 km)
Shortly after you leave Tangermuende, you will enter the bird watching area of Jerichow. The town Jerichow is best known for its historical late romanticist monastery originally built in the 12th century. As you continue on with your today’s cycle tour, you will eventually reach the construction of the waterway intersection. This impressive construction was built in 2001, allowing the ships to cross over the Elbe, connecting the waters of Hannover, Magdeburg and Berlin. Not long after the Waterway intersection you will reach the capital of Saxony-Anhalt. An absolute ‘must-see’ here is the Magdeburg Cathedral, the symbol of the city.

Note: If today’s cycle tour is too long for you, we can split it into two cycle tours. Please ask for your individual itinerary.

Day 8: Departure from Magdeburg
There is still plenty to see in Magdeburg! This city full of arts, crafts, interesting history, sporting possibilities and various events offers a programme for more than just a few days! You can extend your bicycle holidays with extra nights in Hamburg or Magdeburg or continue to Dresden. We are happy to provide you with more information!

This trip is not recommendable for travellers with mobility impairments.

Cycle tours along Germany's most popular cycle path

Overwiev map of the Elbe River in GermanyThe Elbe flows through beautiful countryside. Its characteristic features include the towering Elbe Sandstone Massif, delightful riverbank meadows and impressive terrace vineyards. There are charming historical monuments along the river and lovely "old towns".

The Elbe, Germany's second largest river, flows through beautiful countryside. Its characteristic features include the towering Elbe Sandstone Massif, delightful riverbank meadows and impressive terrace vineyards in the region around Meissen. There are plenty of charming historical monuments along the river including magnificent castles, palaces and lovely, preserved, historical "old towns".

The cycle tours are fairly flat and follow the run of the river Elbe.
