Cuckoo clocks, “Bollenhut” hats and cherry gateaux are surely the most recognizable symbols of the Black Forest, yet its hills and valleys are also full of fascinating landscapes, living tradition and a blend of modern architecture and idyllic half-timbered towns. The region is also both renowned for and characterised by its traditional farmhouses with clipped gable roofs.

It was a blend of the Black Forest’s scenic beauty and the sense of tradition among its residents that attracted large numbers of artists to the region in the 19th and early 20th centuries. Their work made the Black Forest famous all over the world – we recommend to experience its unique beauty yourself!

The Romantic Road, a former trade road during the Middle Ages, Germany's best known and most popular tourist route still retains much of its medieval character. The route often winds through forgotten sections of countryside, and connects Bavaria’s most beautiful towns and villages.

The best known amongst them are medieval Rothenburg ob der Tauber, Würzburg with its Baroque style and wine, Augsburg, the city of silver and the Fugger family, and the small but enchanting town of Dinkelsbühl. The fairytale castles Neuschwanstein and Hohenschwangau as well as the Alps complete the charm of the Romantic Road. Get to see all of this beauty on our cultural tour along the Romantic Road!

Basic package for your cultural tour "German Reunification"
7 days/6 nights

Day 1: Individual arrival to Berlin

You will start your cultural tour in the largest and most important German city - the capital Berlin. Take a first look into the turbulent hustle and bustle of one of Europe's most exciting metropolises.

Day 2: Berlin

brandenburger tor 5 c augustustours kleinDuring a city tour you will get to know Berlin. Marvel at the many different facets of the city, take a look at the famous and the unknown. In the once-divided city as a symbol of a divided country, you can still find places and sites that remind you of the division of the city and the country. Especially the Berlin Wall Documentation Center shows in clear and impressive manner the conditions in the divided Berlin in the second half of the last century. Here you get a feeling for what it must have been like to live in Berlin divided by a wall, here the "Iron Curtain" comes alive once again. You should also not miss a visit to the East Side Gallery. This is a permanent open-air-gallery on the longest still remaining section of the Berlin Wall. Here your group can relive German history.

Day 3: Berlin

checkpoint charlie c visitberlin.de kochTake the chance to look into life in the GDR. How did look like the everyday life, the private life of the inhabitants and the society behind the wall? What did department stores, shops, schools and classrooms, living roomes, bedrooms and children's rooms look like, such as workplaces, doctors' surgeries, post offices? During a visit to the GDR-Museum you will be able to learn and discover this and more. You can get an insight into life in the GDR of a different kind by a guided tour at Berlin-Hohenschönhausen Memorial. This museum and memorial is located on the site of the main political prison of the former East German Ministry of State Security ("Stasi"). Here you can receive an impression of the methods of the "Stasi" and the conditions of imprisonment of political prisoners including torture measures.

Day 4: Berlin - Potsdam -  Leipzig

sansoucci castle © DZT, Dietmar ScherfOn the 4th day of this historic tour Potsdam will be the centre of attention. The beautiful city just outside Berlin has a lot to offer and is rich in history and culture. You can visit the magnificent Sanssouci Palace ("sans souci" is a French phrase and means "without worry"). This was the summer palace of Frederick the Great, King of Prussia, and is often compared to the Palace of Versailles near Paris. Let yourself be enchanted by the beauty of the park and the palace while immersing yourself in German and European history of the 18th century. After you have convinced yourself of Potsdam's beauty, the tour continues to Leipzig.

Day 5: Leipzig

nikolaikirche leipzig c augustustours anke wowereit 7Welcome to Leipzig, the largest city of Saxony. Your guided walking tour is thematically dedicated to the peaceful revolution of 1989, which had its origin in Leipzig. You will see all the important places, e.g. the Nikolaikirche (St. Nicholas Church) and get all the background informations and listen to the stories that finally made history. You also have the option to visit the memorial site "Runde Ecke" (Rounded corner). This museum shows the history, structure and functioning of the Ministry of State Security ("Stasi") in the GDR, which is located in the former seat of the district administration for state security.

Day 6: Leipzig

Abendstimmung in Leipzig web c Nico BullanIn the St. Nicholas Church you have the opportunity to participate in a prayer for peace, the same prayers with which the end of the "Cold War" was initiated at the 1980s. Furthermore, you should not miss the view of a particulary bizarre part of East German history: The "Government and Emergency Bunker of the Ministry State Security" in Machern near Leipzig. Built to continue the ministry's work in the case of a military strike. Of course during your tour you will have time enough to discover today's Leipzig.

Day 7: Individual Departure

After an impressive cultural tour we wish you a pleasant way home. We hope you have spent a great time in Germany!

This itinerary is only a suggestion for your next historic tour throughout Germany which can be adjusted according to your desires. The Reformation in the 16th century with leading figure Martin Luther (1483-1546) is probably one of the most important cultural events in Germany with a lasting worldwide influence. The publication of his theses in 1517 led to a hardly suspected upheaval in church and society. In 2017, 500 years later, this event was commemorated in Wittenberg and other places of activity of the former Augustinian monk.

In the year 2021 Worms will also dedicate itself to an anniversary: 500 years of the Diet of Worms. There, the reformer was ordered to revoke his theses and publications, but refused.

Join in the experience of yet another special anniversary in regards to Luther. Worms and other "Luther sites" are welcoming guests with many great events and exhibitions.

Luther sites in Worms

Unfortunately, there are no longer any buildings that commemorate Luther's stay in Worms in 1521 because they were destroyed in 1689. However, places that tell the story of the Diet of Worms can be visited:

Martinspforte – Luther entered the city via this gateway. Today, the front of the house built there is a reminder of this event.

Luther Monument – Erected in 1868, the monument acts as a reminder of Luther and other reformers who worked here.

Trinity Church – A monumental painting
(1733) shows Luther in front of the Diet
of Worms.

Possible tour extensions from Worms:

  • Heidelberg: Old Town Tour and Heidelberg Castle
  • Wiesbaden: City tour, visit of the Henkell sparkling wine cellar with a tasting
  • Mainz: City tour, Gutenberg museum, Art Gallery ("Kunsthalle")

Please note: Due to the cancellation of the 42nd Passion Play Oberammergau 2020, this offer is currently not bookable! We will be pleased to inform you as soon as travel offers for the catch-up date in 2022 are bookable.

For properly introducing your group tour to the Passion Play Oberammergau 2020, it is only appropriate to further introduce you to other German cities with cultural importance. Commencing in Berlin, we recommend a visit to the popular Museum Island with its artworks and sculptures after a first orientation tour. Then, dive into the tray and experience the lively personality of the people and the city itself. Dresden, also called “Florence of the Elbe”, is worth another stop, if only for its old town influenced by the baroque period. While there, you will figure out what the surname is about.

Before leaving Munich to Oberammergau, we recommend a stop-over in Nuremberg. The restored Margravial Opera House in Bayreuth is going to open in April 2018 and is recommended to be included in your group tour. To enjoy the rest of your evening, we recommend dining in a local restaurant and tasting Franconian specialities.

Lake Constance and its surroundings is a popular travel destination in Germany. Not least because of its diversity: late antique buildings as well as elements of Art Nouveau characterise the cityscape of Constance. This visit will make a great addition to your itinerary.

Of course, there are many more attractive sights you shouldn’t miss out on, e.g. the Flower Island with its breathtaking blaze of colours, or the Castle in Mainau, built in the 18th century. Furthermore, we recommend a visit to Salem Monastery and the historical island Reichenau which is part of the UNESCO World Heritage.

In both arrangements, the 1-day-package and 2-days-package, the dinner between the first and second part of the play will be included. Your guests will have an overnight stay in Oberammergau.

Day 4: Constance and Lake Constance
The next stop for your group tour is Constance, the biggest city surrounding Lake Constance. After check-in at hotel, your guests will go on a sunset boat trip on Lake Constance with included dinner for getting a first impression of the beautiful landscape.

Day 5: Flower Island Mainau and Reichenau
On the fifth day your guests will be picked up for a trip to Mainau, which is also called "Flower Island" because of its breathtaking blaze of colour all year long. After an individual lunch and a little break, we recommend a visit to historical island Reichenau, which is part of the UNESCO World Heritage since 2000.

Day 6: Salem Monastery and Palace

It is advisable to finish the tour with one of the most impressive buildings of the region: Salem Monastery and Palace. Visit the old abbey, built in the 13th century, and take a stroll through the extensive park. After that, your guests will have time for lunch at a local restaurant. A special interest visit would be the Lake Dwelling Museum. Visitors will get information about the work and life of pile-dwellers and also about the architecture of these buildings. Enjoy your last evening of the tour in a local restaurant or bar - your guests will be impressed by the wide range of wine varieties of the region.

Day 7: Individual departure
After breakfast at the hotel your group tour is coming to an end. Of course, we provide to organise the transfer to the airport of your choice for your individual departure.

The 42nd Passion Play Oberammergau takes place from 16th May to 4th October 2020. The history of the Oberammergau Passion Play goes back to the year 1633. Plagued by pest and negative effects of the Thirty Years’ War, the inhabitants of Oberammergau decided to perform “the game of suffering, dying and rising of our Lord Jesus Christ” every ten years. The play was presented Whitsun 1634 for the first time.

You won't want to miss this impressive event! More than 2000 local amateurs, singers and musicians are involved – nearly half of Oberammergaus’ inhabitants.

By the way: The Passion Theatre Oberammergau is the largest open-air theatre with covered audience area worldwide: 4.500 visitors could become part of the event at the same time.
