Cycle tours along the Main River from Bamberg to Aschaffenburg
Downstream through picturesque vineyards and charming half-timbered towns
This bike tour starts in the world cultural heritage in Bamberg, very fascinating with its unique historical townscape. You cycle on to the Franconian wine-growing lands until you reach the residence of Würzburg, also classified UNESCO world cultural heritage in 1982. From here on, the landscape will change slowly as the vineyards disappear in favour of the green forests of the Spessart.
On paved bike trails and always staying close to the Main, you will pass numerous lovely villages sticking out thanks to their neat half-timbered constructions. Short stages and many worthwhile breaks make this trip especially enjoyable.

Itinerary

Day 1: Bamberg arrival
Once youve arrived, take the time to discover the old city, with its breweries and churches. We recommend seeing the Kaiserdom with its world-famous sculptures, such as the Bamberg knight and Heinrich IIs sarcophagus.
Overnight stay in Bamberg -
Day 2: Bamberg – Schweinfurt (approx. 61 km)
Today youll be following the Regnitz until you reach the Main, which will then guide you to the Maria Limbach pilgrims church. Youll come upon the first vineyards, which mark the the border between the beer- and wine-producing areas of Franconia. Your days journey will end in Schweinfurt, whose historic center is well worth your while to visit.
Overnight stay in Schweinfurt -
Day 3: Schweinfurt – Volkach/Schwarzach (approx. 30-45 km)
A quick side-trip to the beautiful village “Theres” will give you new energy for the rest of the trip. In the afternoon you will ride to Volkach, known for its excellent wines. Along the way you will pass the city of Fahr, which is famous for its “Bocksbeutel”, a wide, rounded wine bottle typical for the region.
Overnight stay in Volkach or Schwarzach -
Day 4: Volkach – Würzburg (approx. 50-65 km)
After leaving Volkach youll head away from the Main for a bit, following canals until you make it back to the Main. The leveled, well-paved bike route leads youll be in Würzburg in no time, leaving plenty of opportunities to tour the city by foot in the afternoon.
Overnight stay in Würzburg -
Day 5: Würzburg – Lohr (approx. 60 km)
On your way to Karlstadt and its famous downtown area, youll pass through Veitshöchheim, getting a chance to see the bishops summer residence, as well as the French rococo garden. The look of the countryside is changing: instead of the characteristic vines terraces shady forests now border the bicycle path. On flat paths you cycle to Gemünden, the town of the three rivers or further on to Lohr.
Overnight stay in Lohr -
Day 6: Lohr – Wertheim (approx. 46 km)
The Main took millions of years to carve out the close-packed hills of the area. Thankfully, your trip will not take that long. After you pass Rothenfels, whose castle guards the narrow valley, youll reach Marktheidenfeld and, finally, Wertheim. Take some time to see the beautiful half-timbered houses in the old city during your stay here.
Overnight stay in Wertheim -
Day 7: Wertheim – Aschaffenburg (approx. 36 km - 77 km)
For your 6th stage you have the choice: If you start in morning and pedal hard, you can reach Miltenberg and its many stately half-timbered houses already at noon (approx. 36 km).
From Miltenberg you can shorten your todays stage and take the train to Aschaffenburg. Direct train, 45 minutes, tickets are not included. If you keep cycling you will follow on flat paths quickly to the little town Klingenberg (approx. 51 km).
Also from here you could shorten the stage by taking the train. Before you reach the huge sandstone palace Johannisburg in Aschaffenburg, you cycle through the wineyards on flat paths.
Overnight stay in Aschaffenburg -
