Cycling holidays along the Rhine Cycle Path from Cologne to Arnhem (NL)

From Cologne charm to Dutch cycling pleasure

From Rhenish cheerfulness to Dutch cosiness, the Rhine Cycle Path lets you experience all this and much more on a cycle tour from Cologne to Arnhem. Historical sites, extensive Rhine meadows and urban industrial culture can be discovered on your way along the Rhine. The cathedral, famous landmark and centre of the city of Cologne since time immemorial, located right on the river at the Hohenzollern Bridge, will impress you right from the start!

With its numerous museums and sights, the carnival city is one of the most important cultural centres in Europe. No less interesting are the first destinations of your cycling holiday: the tranquil fortress town of Zons or the Rhine metropolis of Düsseldorf. Whether shopping on the famous Königsallee, strolling along the riverside promenade or eating and drinking well in one of the countless breweries and pubs – Düsseldorf has plenty to offer around the old town and the castle tower.

In the "Duisburg-Nord Landscape Park" you can then explore a disused ironworks. Before you continue towards Holland, it is worth visiting the reconstructed Roman town of Xanten – one of the highlights of your cycle tour along the Rhine Cycle Path. Plenty of unspoilt river landscape lines your final stage to the Dutch provincial capital of Arnhem.

Itinerary

  • Day 1: Individual arrival in Cologne
After your arrival, you should not miss a visit to Cologne Cathedral. Get in the mood for your upcoming bike tour from Cologne to Arnhem with an extensive stroll through the city.
    Overnight stay in Cologne
  • Day 2: Cologne – Düsseldorf (approx. 53 km)
On your first stage, you will travel along the banks of the Rhine to the medieval town of Zons. Known for its well-preserved fortifications from the 14th century, the "Rothenburg of the Rhineland" is a recommended stopping point. If you follow the Rhine Cycle Path further on, you will soon also see the typical silhouette of Düsseldorf with the Rhine Tower. Whether in the old town or on the Rhine promenade – in the city you have many opportunities to take a stroll in the afternoon. Depending on what you feel like, you can experience the Rhenish cheerfulness in one of the 250 bars and pubs at the "longest bar in the world" or enjoy the Rhenish cosiness with a genuine Düsseldorf Altbier.
    Overnight stay in Düsseldorf
  • Day 3: Düsseldorf – Duisburg (approx. 49 km)
This tour takes you to historic Kaiserswerth first. The picturesque town centre is famous for its 17th and 18th century baroque houses. The ruins of the imperial palace of the legendary Barbarossa is also worth a visit. The ferry takes you to the left side of the Rhine (costs not included in the tour price) to explore the moated castle of Linn. The green of the Rhine meadows slowly gives way to impressive industrial architecture, and the cycle path changes to the right bank of the Rhine and to the mouth of the Ruhr. It is not far to your accommodation in Duisburg. As the so-called gateway to the Ruhr area, Duisburg has the largest inland port in Europe, which you can explore on a boat tour.
    Overnight stay in Duisburg
  • Day 4: Duisburg – Wesel (approx. 47 km)
At the beginning of todays cycle tour, a guided tour awaits you in the "Duisburg Nord Landscape Park", where you will learn more about the industrial history of the disused ironworks with its blast furnaces, the gasometer and the casting hall. The landscape along the banks of the Rhine will then become green and idyllic as you cycle along the left bank of the Rhine on a railway line that is no longer in use. After the nature reserve on the Lower Rhine, the town of Wesel awaits you.
    Overnight stay in Wesel
  • Day 5: Wesel – Emmerich (approx. 52 km)
The Roman and cathedral city of Xanten is a destination on your tour today. In the historic town centre you have the opportunity to visit the magnificent St. Victors Cathedral. Also worthwhile is a visit to the archaeological park and Roman museum, which revive the ancient Roman province that once existed in Xanten. As the route continues, you cycle past inviting bathing lakes and wonderful views of the Rhine river. You will finally reach Emmerich via Germanys longest suspension bridge. On the Rhine promenade you can end the day in a relaxed atmosphere.
    Overnight stay in Emmerich
  • Day 6: Emmerich – Arnhem (approx. 41 km)
Look forward to the Dutch section of the Rhine on the last stage of your cycle tour to Arnhem. The ferry (costs not included in the tour price) will take you across the river in the morning and across the Dutch border. You can enjoy one of the most beautiful natural landscapes of the Netherlands, the nature reserve "De Gelderse Poort", on elevated dam paths. After passing the last locks and bridges, the old town of Arnhem awaits you, where you can learn more about the history of the "Arnhem Bridge" or visit historic houses and windmills in the open-air museum.
    Overnight stay in Arnhem
  • Day 7: Individual departure
Your cycle tour from Cologne to Arnhem has shown you the most beautiful sides of the Lower Rhine in Germany and Holland. With many lasting memories, you will start your journey home after breakfast. Alternatively, you can extend your cycling holiday with additional nights in Arnhem or Cologne - please feel free to request us!
