Known as the “Christkindlmarkt”, Munich’s main Christmas market is one of Germany’s oldest, and enjoys fame well beyond the boundaries of the Bavarian capital. Grouped around Marienplatz square, the market was first mentioned in a document as the “Nikolausmarkt” in 1310. Its traditions include the erection of a nearly 30 metre-high Christmas tree decorated with 2,500 lights in front of the Town Hall. 140 stalls attract around three million visitors from around the world each year.
