Reopening of Berlin State Opera Unter den Linden

During the reconstruction period of seven years the Berlin State Opera had its temporary location at the Schiller Theatre in Berlin-Charlottenburg. The construction works of the opera house Unter den Linden will be finished soon and so the State Opera will be back “home”. On 30th September this will be celebrated with a grand open air concert which will join into the new season. The official start of the season will be on 3rd October.

The Berlin State Opera was opened in 1743 in Prussian neo-classical style and ever since was an important location of premiers. Amongst others the famous German composers Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy and Richard Strauss conducted here.

The rebuilding was planned to be finished in 2013 after starting in 2010 but with a few years of delay music fans will be delighted even more to the reopening and looking forward to the new season. During the reconstruction works rubbernecks had the chance to take a glance at the progress while a guided tour to the building site.

The official start into the new season at the “new old home” of the Berlin State Opera will be accompanied by music of Robert Schumann at the play “scenes from Goethe´s Faust” on 3^rd October. After that, a break of two month is necessary to adapt the technical equipment to the needs of the musicians. The regular schedule will then start on 7^th December and highlights of the season will be Strauss´ ”Salome”, Wagner´s “Tristan and Isolde” or “Macbeth” starring the world famous singer Anna Netrebko. The schedule was introduced at a press conference on 22nd June.

One can also look forward to the festive days at the end of March 2018 which will offer a colourful programme with representations of e.g. Verdi´s “Falstaff”, Wagner´s “Parsifal” or three concerts of the Berlin Philharmonics.
